Kit is reluctant to revisit his past with the cult known as the Bone Men, but when a sweet farmer asks for his help, he can't ignore that maybe this is his chance to bring down the cult and leave his past behind. Penny isn't seeking an adventure, but he wants to be able to tell his family he tried his best to thwart the cult that stole his father's bones.
From the blurb:
“We weren’t meant to burn our dead.”
After escaping the cult that nearly destroyed him, Kit Mosel has built a new life. He’s sure that no one in town knows his real name or what he did, until Penwell Oliver appears, desperate for help retrieving his father’s stolen remains from the very cult Kit fled.
Kit knows he should say no, but there's something about Penny he can't refuse.
Together, Penny and Kit plan to infiltrate the cult and earn their trust. Kit knows how to blend in and play their games, but Penny isn’t like him; he’s always been too soft. Too quick to trust. Worse, Penny draws attention from people who would gladly hurt him just to punish Kit.
The deeper they go, the more Kit unravels. Penny isn’t just a liability—he’s a temptation. A reminder of everything Kit thought he didn’t deserve. And in a place where weakness is punished and love is weaponized, wanting each other could cost them both everything.
SNik's review:
First in series (The Bone Men). Fantasy. Very slow burn/no burn. Dual POV.

Penny is a farmer desperate to retrieve his father’s bones from the death cult that stole them, and he tracks down a blacksmith that left the cult more than ten years ago. Kit is trying to forget his life with the Bone Men, but helping Penny may absolve some of his guilt as well as help bring down the cult he wishes was destroyed.
This is the beginning of a slow building story, with two likable characters on a quest to bring down an evil cult while building an unexpected closeness. There are a few stumbles along the way, unexpected enemies and obstacles, but whenever Kit and Penny are together on page it feels like a content bubble and you almost forget the danger. The romance is just starting to bloom and I wish there had been more forward momentum on their plan as well as more depth to the why’s of the cult, but I really enjoyed this introduction to a new series and am very invested to see what happens. I am here to root for Kit and Penny.
Angel's review:
I'm a huge fan of Quinn's writing so when I saw that were co-writing a new series I was so excited to read it. At first I had a difficult time getting fully immersed into this story, however, as I kept reading the more I got pulled in by these characters.
This story is very unique, to simplify things, it's about our MC's joining a cult, or rejoining in Kit's case, to try to get back Penny's father bones, and take down the cult for good. In reality it is so much more than that, there's so many different things going on in the background that makes this story feel so full. Penny and Kit don't get along in the beginning, in fact Kit despises Penny at the start. Rightfully so seeing as how the bubbly farmer wants to drag Kit back to the life he ran from.
However, as their journey together progresses they realize they have more in common than they first thought, and that maybe things aren't as simple between them as just being friends.
If you don't like slow burn romances, this won't be for you. This is slow burn go the max which I loved! We get to see them kiss in this book, and see Kit start to recognize how he truly feels about Penny, but other than that the romance aspect is more of a simmer in this first book. I really enjoy that this first book was focused on building up the world and depending the bond Kit and Penny have slowly rather than it being rushed. I'm very excited to read book two and see if Kit and Penny will be able to pass the second trial, and If the evil Maverick will meet his end.
