The Road Ahead (A Pathfinders Lake Romance) by Addison Acres

Can love be enough when most of the world is tearing you down? Rio is looking for a new life. They have been disowned by their father and are running towards the only family they have left. Cooper and Rio show us that love can conquer all of you believe and fight for it.

From the blurb:

Rio

After being disowned by my dad, I left Georgia, finding my way to Pathfinders Lake, to my cousins who’d always accepted me without question. The idea of a week away with them, at a music festival and exploring mountain roads in my Trueno ‘86, sounded like the perfect escape. But then there’s Cooper. My cousin, the one who helped me understand myself, the one who’s always been perfect in every way. I try to push down this old crush that flares up again, but I can’t. He’s gay. Could he ever be interested in a pint-sized enby firecracker with more crop tops than one human should reasonably own? But when we reconnect over the week, I can’t help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, the road ahead could be more than I ever imagined.

Cooper

Rio’s finally here, and I’m excited—more than I probably should be. They’ve always been the most badass person I know, and now, watching them embrace their truth, I’m proud of everything they’ve become. We’re spending a week at the cabin, and every minute feels like we’re picking up right where we left off. But as we spend more time together, I start to realize something—something I’ve been trying to ignore. The connection we share is more than just family. I never expected to feel this way about Rio, but when I see them, I can’t deny the pull. The road I thought I’d be walking is shifting, and the only one I want beside me is Rio.

The Road Ahead is a low angst, only-one-bed, pan-awakening M/X romance. It is part of the Pathfinders Lake multi-author series that features forbidden romance. Each book can be read as a standalone but is better enjoyed as a series.

Angel's review:

Addison Acres is a new-to-me author, I haven't read any of their previous work and after reading this, I might have to look into their backlist. The story had a great flow to it, events happened naturally, there was a very nice build up to the climax of the story, and the angst that was involved was minor but played a valuable role.

The MC's themselves; Rio and Cooper, were fantastic! Rio is confident and fashionable and is a social butterfly, and Cooper is compassionate, caring, kind, and is passionate about cars. Specifically, passionate and in love with Rio's car. I enjoyed reading this story as a whole but what I loved the most is the relationship Rio and Cooper have with each other.

They prioritize communication, they truly listen to one another and accept them as is, they don't push or think they know better then the other, they just accept each other as they are. Which is think is really beautiful. I love how supportive and encouraging they are of one another, even before they started their romantic relationship they had such a wonderful bond, then once the romance came into the picture, it just added up to be a really fantastic and wholesome relationship. I also completely ADORED the importance of penguins being mentioned throughout the story, that is so very cute and I was so happy to see that be something special special between Cooper and Rio.

Lori C's review:

The Road Ahead is an M/X forbidden romance. It is about two cousins, Rio and Cooper and the choices that bring them together. I found their story to be pretty low angst. While they both had fears and concerns, they were willing to be together regardless. I think that was the best part of this book, they knew the other was their person.

I think the author Addison Acres did a good job keeping the story moving along with every detaIl having its place at just the right time. She also made the each character stand out. Rio is a self defense teacher who loves cars. Cooper is a paramedic who volunteers at the hospital with kids making balloon animals. Penguins! I love the addition of the penguins and how they show their love. I even really started to like Brad towards the end of the story. He totally took responsibility for his words and actions that were hurtful and you can tell he cares for Teresa. I loved how the family came together and Rio felt their love and also their jokes. Lol. I would love a short novella/epilogue about Teresa and Brad as well. They were a good foil to Rio and Cooper. I really liked this book and the series overall.

Molly Otto's review:

Now that is how you close a combined series. Rio & Cooper are cousins who have always been extremely close and when Rio returns to Minnesota to live with Cooper, time hasn't taken away their bond. Together, with Coopers sister, Teresa and her boyfriend, Brad, spend the week at Pathfinders Lake for a music festival and to give the cousins time to learn what the adult version of each other is like and let the bond deepen. Brad, shows his ignorance here and there and it was nice to see that when he apologized it was sincere and does make the effort to show he is not as he first came off to be. Absolutely adore how fiercely Cooper and Teresa stand up for Rio, even though they can protect themselves no question. The bond of this family is so deep, its a beautiful sight to see, their is no judgment just love and acceptance. Their bond is something that I wish all people could experience, even though Rios dad is a jerk, that doesn't stop the rest of the family from accepting and supporting Rio. This was my first book from this author, and if they continue to write like this, it will not be my last.

Heather's Review:

This book was sweet, steamy and endearing!  Cousins, soulmates and best friends are able to connect in this only one bed, forbidden relationship romance that caps off the Pathfinder Lake Romance series in such a sweet way!

I love each character's personality and their place in the story that makes it blend together but gives each character places to shine as individuals!  I love their history and what they are building now!

A beautiful romance and a great end to this chapter of Pathfinder Lake Romances - I hope this group revisit the area again in the future!
