Something Cryptid This Way Comes is the fall/Halloween book in the Love in Maplewood series and it is the perfect example of best friends to lovers. If you love all things fall, two best friends finally discovering how much they need each other, and fun cryptid times, this is the one you should check out.
From the blurb:
Trevor Casal loves Maplewood and will do anything for its residents, including host the town’s first Cryptid Night to kick off the month-long Halloween festivities. After all, Mabel, Maplewood’s own monster, is a tourist attraction, and this is an opportunity to increase business for his inn, his family legacy. The event, and a rash of new sightings, brings his best friend Bram, a cryptid investigator, to town, and Trevor worries that spending so much time together will give away his secret… he's been in love with Bram for years.
Bram Macleod’s fascination with cryptids began at the age of ten, and his first encounter with Maplewood’s resident monster. In the years since his pro football career ended, he’s devoted his time to documenting investigations and myths on his podcast. Returning to Maplewood after twenty-five years away, Bram is eager to dive into exploring cryptids old and new and to spend time with Trevor, but hesitant on how to handle the fact that, lately, he’s started seeing his best friend in a new light… one that feels a lot like love.
As Bram and Trevor chase down cryptids and get immersed in the town's Halloween activities, their feelings for each other become impossible to ignore. Crossing that line threatens to change the friendship they depend on, but could give them everything they long for.
Something Cryptid This Way Comes is a low-angst MM romance with matchmaking family, tricks and treats, a guard dog who likes everyone, so many plaid shirts, bedtime stories as a form of wooing, and a love forged from friendship… with the help of the “Maplewood Monster.”
With the highest percentage of LGBTQIA+ residents in Vermont, Maplewood is a town where everyone belongs. And with festivals year round, there’s always something fun happening! This multi-author, low-angst queer series features ten standalone romances—each set against the backdrop of a different festival. Come for the celebrations, stay for the happily ever afters!
Molly Otto's review:
We have reached October for Maplewood festivals and its Cryptid & Halloween time!
Trevor & Bram have been best friends since childhood and when the Maplewood town council convinces Trevor to host a Cryptid Night for the town's beloved legend Mabel, he immediately thinks of his best friend Bram, who runs a cryptid podcast to help out. Since Bram left Maplewood at 17 for college, then a pro football career, running his podcast, and travels the world yet hasn't returned, until his friend asks for help. Upon returning, those feelings he has been slowly getting their past interactions over the years come forward. With so much time together, these two are able to take the next step to be something more.
Susan does a fantastic job in a trope, that at more times than not leaves me frustrated. However, with these two, it just slowly builds until they reach that point of no return and take that next leap. I enjoyed the towns support and helping each of these members achieve not only achieving their dreams, but in finding their perfect match.
The whole universe had a great way of keeping on point with the same feel throughout. Was a pleasant surprise to see so many different unique authors come together and stick to that same vibe throughout.
Heather's Review:
I love books set in the fall! My birthday is in October, but more than that you start to feel the air cool, the leaves get crisp and of course, cryptid sightings skyrocket... but I've always thought that Fall was a great time to fall in love...
This book is besties to lovers and with the slow build and yearning glances, we watch these two strain to get closer without risking it all... until their tipping point and boy do the sparks fly!
I love that this book combined their friendship to love story, but also showcased the meddling townspeople, other couples from the series and incorporated that Maplewood je ne sais quoi...
I said in a previous review that I wish every town was Maplewood, and it remains true after this tale too!
