The Island by Briar Prescott

Best friends, and unrequited love, and an island that's trying to kill them. Dylan has to survive being stranded on a desolate island, but also hide his attraction to his best friend which becomes more and more difficult as time passes. Can he steal precious moments with Adrian knowing that he will lose them if they eventually return home?

From the blurb:

My heart is in his hands, and he doesn’t even know it.

Adrian Elias Olsen crashed into my world like a wrecking ball—adventurous, carefree, and impossible to resist. He gave me a home, a family, and a place to belong.
Somewhere along the way, I gave him my heart... And now it’s too late to take it back.
I crave, and I yearn, and I ache, and I want.
Always.
All the time.
And he doesn’t have a clue.
I promised myself I’d get over him. The trip we take together is supposed to be the end—the last time he’s mine before I finally let him go.
But when paradise unexpectedly turns into purgatory, we’re forced to only rely on each other.
Suddenly, every glance lingers. Every touch burns. And the pull between us only grows stronger—dangerously so.
Because no matter how much I want him, I can’t have him.
In the real world, Adrian’s heart isn’t mine to keep.
In the real world, it already belongs to someone else.

SNik's review:

Standalone. Childhood friends/neighbors. Slow burn. Dual POV.

Dylan and Adrian become best friends at age ten, and Adrian’s family welcomes Dylan and gives him the family and support he hasn’t had since his mom died. While Dylan acknowledges his deep love for Adrian he slowly tries to distance himself from the heartbreak, and when Adrian gets engaged Dylan plans a trip as a sort of farewell unbeknownst to Adrian. But a horrible accident strands them together and their survival brings an even deeper closeness than ever before.

In this story the friendship between Adrian and Dylan is true and unbreakable, and the pining and romantic love Dylan feels for the unaware Adrian is heartbreaking and beautifully written. It’s hard to imagine Adrian and Dylan becoming a couple if the island hadn’t happened, so I did struggle with the strength of the romantic attachment Adrian develops, but I enjoyed every moment they were on page together with the banter, the feelings, the importance of their friendship. This was an engrossing story and I was glad to see such a wonderful HEA for them.
