Only Temporary by Nicole Dykes

A special caring social worker helping keep a family together falls for the man he knows he shouldn't start anything with. Kellan is overwhelmed with his family responsibilities but he will do anything to keep his family and maybe hold on to the man that makes him feel and helps hold everything together.

From the Only Temporary blurb:

Kellan
She’s gone. And I don’t care. At least that’s what I tell myself, but she also left me with a really big mess to clean up. My siblings hate me. As they should. I may be twenty-four, but no part of me feels up to the task of taking care of my four younger siblings. I barely have my life under control, but it doesn’t matter now. I have temporary custody, and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure it’s not only permanent, but also the best thing for these kids.

Phillip
I haven’t been a social worker long, but I already know, without a doubt, this case has the ability to break me. Four minors left with their oldest brother—a brother still fighting with addiction and so much bitterness, it’s stifling. But I won’t give up on them like the rest of society. No matter what, I’m going to find a way to make sure this arrangement isn’t merely temporary—I just need to make sure I don’t lose my head or my heart in the process.

SNik's review:

Standalone. Forbidden relationship. Single parent. Slow burn. Dual POV.

Kellan had been planning to take on the guardianship of his younger siblings after getting sober but it's taken him years and he certainly wasn’t fully prepared. Phillip is the social worker assigned to evaluate Kellan and his family’s permanence, and he quickly falls for the struggling man and the angry family trying to find a new normal.

The attraction and connection between Kellan and Phillip is immediate, both men feel it even as they are taking a risk to be together. I always appreciate it when a main character falls for someone and has no angst about a first time attraction to another man, so Kellan’s pursuit of Phillip seemed sweet and how could he not fall for the caring, understanding, and generous Phillip. This story was filled with hope, and although the family dynamics are rough at first, everyone was trying so very hard, even Kellan’s helpful and supportive best friend Tatum who was really a saint. An enjoyable read with characters to root for and a lovely HEA.

Heather's Review:

This was a sweet romance with a ton of angst - not in the romance, but more in the general life of a young man who has to take over the raising of four younger siblings after his mother dies of an overdose...

There was a lot going on, but the chemistry was almost instantaneous with a slow build to a physical relationship and a lot of family dynamics to build on.

I truly appreciated how we built not only to the couple's HEA, but a happily ever after for the whole family.
