His Mate By Vengeance (Lunetti Pack Book 1) by Mel Aitchess

A reluctant Alpha shifter bodyguard to a dangerous and sexy vampire assassin. Vin doesn't need a protector, but Angelo certainly fits the bill, and as they are forced to work together maybe there's more to their attraction than just lust.

From the His Mate By Vengeance blurb:

I have lived for centuries. I have used and been used. Had countless lovers. And I have never wanted more. Not once. Not until today. Not until you.

Angelo is a protector—head of the Lunetti Pack's security. He walks a delicate line avoiding the darker side of his mafia shifter pack's business, but there's no grey area in his hatred of vampires. Not after what they did to his family. When his Alpha orders him to keep one safe, it takes everything in him to obey. So, why is his wolf so intoxicated by the sassy vampire assassin's scent permeating the safe house? And did there have to be only one damn bed?

Vin doesn't know who's trying to frame him for the bombing targeting the head of the local vampire coven, but he's got the skills and ruthlessness to figure it out. When he called in a favour for somewhere to lay low, he hadn't intended it to come equipped with a wolf shifter bodyguard, but he isn't complaining. Angelo is as easy on the eyes as he is to rile up. Seduction is a game and Vin's always loved a challenge. Until Angelo does something no one ever has before. He cares.

Now, all bets are off. Angelo is his.

His Mate By Vengeance is a steamy enemies to lovers, fated mates, MM paranormal romance between a grumpy wolf shifter and a murder sunshine vampire assassin. It features forced proximity, only one bed, and knotting. There is no mpreg in this world.

SNik's review:

First in series (The Lunetti Pack). Paranormal. Forced proximity. Fated mates. Slow burn. Quick read. Mild cliffhanger. Dual POV.

Angelo is the dedicated protector for his wolf pack, he doesn’t kill unnecessarily and his pack is his number one priority always. When tasked with bodyguarding a sassy vampire assassin named Corvin (Vin), Angelo wants to refuse, but there is a reason Vin is being targeted and so the pack needs to find out why and protect him. Both Angelo and Vin are capable, dangerous, and inexplicably drawn to each other, but vampires and shifters aren’t meant to be together.

There is enough background for both Angelo and Vin to give a sense of who they are, and their push and pull is equal, as they are both equally strong willed and intelligent. As they are mates it was easy to see they couldn’t ignore their attraction, and there was steam as well as action that kept me turning the pages. A really entertaining first book in this series, and I am really looking forward to more.

Angel's review:

If you like the grumpy/sunshine trope, this is the book for you.

Angelo is a werewolf shifter who despises vampires after one killed his family. He doesn't like harming people in cold blood, so he's a protector of his pack. When his alpha assigns him to watch over a vampire he is not happy about it. Overtime the sassy vampire grows on him though, and these two men form a bond neither expected.

Vin is a vampire assassin, he's hired to take out targets but he makes sure those tasks align with his beliefs. He isn't a cold blooded killer either, he has his ways and his own standards his lives by. When he gets framed for an attack he's forced to go into hiding. There he meets his grumpy wolf bodyguard who is too fascinating for him to ignore. He never wanted repeats with anyone until Angelo, with Angelo everything is different.

I enjoyed this story. The writing was good, the story progressed nicely, the side characters helped move the story along, and the mystery component added an extra bit of fun to the overall plot. Angelo was fighting against how he felt for Vin for almost the whole story, but when he finally accepted how he felt for the vampire it was so heartwarming. It was one of those "finally!" moments. I liked how both of these men were so different from each other but worked together well.

My one critique is I wish they spent more time building a relationship; going on dates, having long conversations, etc, rather than be primarily focused on steamy times. Other than that though I enjoyed the story. I'm looking forward to Luca's story and learning about why he is so against mates, along with figuring out who's after him.
