Pretty Buoy (Swallow Cove Book 2) by DJ Jamison

We are back in Swallow Cove with Pretty Buoy. This is a hurt comfort yet low angst bi awakening grumpy sunshine read.

What's a great way to get your stalker ex to back off? Find yourself a muscular hunk of a bartender to pretend to be your boyfriend of course! And that's exactly what Skyler did when he found himself a Brooks in Pretty Buoy!

From the blurb:

I fell in love with the wrong man, and it changed me. Where I was once confident, I'm skittish. Where I once trusted with my whole heart, I'm guarded.

After leaving my toxic boyfriend, I flee to my family vacation home in Swallow Cove. Which takes me directly into the path of broody bar manager Brooks Riggins.

He's large and intimidating, but with a protective streak that I didn't see coming. When my ex gives me trouble, Brooks tells him to take a hike. Not only that, he also claims to be my new man.

Brooks is as straight as they come, but he's ready to step up and play the part.

In fact, it may not just be pretend, judging by the way Brooks looks at me. Especially when he catches sight of me in the lingerie I sometimes wear.

My ex said the lingerie made me too feminine. Too weak.

Just a pretty boy.

But as Brooks hands me all the power I need to heal and be intimate again, I can finally see the truth.

I am apretty boy, and it doesn't make me weak at all.

In fact, I never have to be weak again.

But can I be strong enough to trust another man with my heart?

Pretty Buoy is Book 2 of Swallow Cove. It can be read as a standalone, but it may be more enjoyable to read Book 1 for an introduction to all the characters in the series.

Trigger Warning: past abuse, toxic ex-boyfriend.

I have a confession to make. I have no idea how I didn't put together that Skyler, one of the MCs of this book, was the same Skyler who skypes in for weekly movie nights with his friends in the Rom-Com Reboot series! It took until he was booting up his laptop and the whole gang appeared for it to hit me! I can't believe I didn't put it together, but once I did it made this story even more enjoyable than it already was. I mean we know from that series that everyone is worried about Skyler and his controlling boyfriend, but Skyler has been tight lipped about the whole thing. I was glad we were able to finally get his story.

Getting over your abusive ex definitely gets a bit easier with a man like Brooks by your side. I liked how he supported Skyler and let everything move at his pace. I also liked how Skyler getting a boyfriend wasn't seen as a magical fix for all of his previous issues. Yes it helped to have someone to lean on, but Skyler was determined to be his own man and he sure as hell proved it! Brooks also had a bit of healing to do. He's spent so long being closed off because of his fears of being left, but Skyler helped to show him it was okay to let people in. It was okay for those who loved him to be a part of his life.

I loved catching up with the local Swallowers. Cash is still determined to get his grumpy B&B owner and I think he may be closer than he thinks. We also had some drama playing out between ex best friends Sawyer and Ash! I'm so glad their story is next in Knockin' Boats. Nothing I love more than an enemies-to-lovers with a bi awakening thrown in!

Molly Otto's review:

Swallow Cove had a way of taking people in and making them family. Skylar comes to hide from his ex, who made him feel less than he was, where he meets the bartender/ manager of the bar his dad owns. Brooks does everything in his power to provide for his grandma, including losing his time for real life.

These two meet under not great circumstances, yet realize they were meant to be in the others' lives. Both need to heal and trust their hearts before they are able to take that next step. Brooks core friend group is amazing and accepts Skylar full heartedly, especially when they see the changes in Brooks. A fun low angst read with all the puns that will leave you smiling.

This story goes along with the events of DOCK TEASE, so it is not necessary to read prior but gives you more background to some of the events happening.

Heather's Review:

I love a good story where the character grows and discovers part of himself that he didn't realize, and when Skylar actually embraces Swallow Cove, he learns so much about himself!  Despite getting out of a truly toxic relationship, his ability to see Brooks and learn to trust himself is lovely!

I also love how their story integrates into the Swallow Cove ongoing saga - with Skylar's ex teaming up with the slimy property developers from Dock Tease...

I can't wait to see what happens next, as Cash is getting his shot in Kockin' Boats.
