Nate is back in his hometown, dragging his estranged son with him and living with the father that drove him away fifteen years ago. Seeing Freddie again only makes his regrets burn hotter, Nate's never forgotten the possible love he lost when he left Freddie behind.
From the Worth the Wait blurb:
It was never over. It was just waiting.
Nathan Carter didn’t return to Worthbridge looking for a second chance. He came back for a roof over his head, a job that pays, and maybe, if he’s lucky, a way to connect with the teenage son he’s barely known. Life in the army taught him how to survive, but not how to be a father… and definitely not how to live with the choices he made the day he walked away from everything. Including Freddie Webb.
PC Freddie Webb never left Worthbridge. Not the town. Not the ghosts. Steady, dependable, the man everyone trusts to hold the line when things fall apart, he’s spent years keeping his head down and his heart locked up tight. But all that control shatters the moment a routine arrest throws him face to face with the boy he once loved… and the son that boy now has.
What started between them as teenagers was messy, intense, and unforgettable. Fifteen years later, it’s no less complicated. Eespecially with Alfie, Nathan’s angry, guarded son, caught between them and already spiralling toward trouble.
As old desires resurface and old wounds reopen, Nathan and Freddie are pulled back into each other’s orbit. But with the whole town watching, tensions rising, and the past refusing to stay buried, they’ll have to decide: play it safe… or risk everything for the love they never got to finish.
Because in Worthbridge, the past never stays buried.
And some loves are worth every second of the wait.
Worth the Wait is the first book in the Worth It series, a gritty MM romance series set in a small coastal town. Each book follows a different couple, all featuring first responders entangled in a severe criminal case threatening the community they serve and the people they love.
SNik's review:
First in series (Worth It). Former best friends. Second chance. Single dad. Slow burn. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.
Fifteen years ago Nate left to join the army and help raise his anticipated child, leaving his best friend Freddie behind with unresolved feelings and heartbreak for them both. Now Nate’s left the army to try and be a fulltime dad, returning to his hometown and running into law enforcement officer Freddie as both men can’t forget their shared past.
There is plenty of outside angst surrounding the main characters, Nate’s troublesome son and homophobic father, and Freddie’s own family, past relationships, and him trying to be true to his job while protecting Nate and his son. I enjoyed the glimpses into Freddie and Nate’s past friendship although I wish they learned more about each other in the present as they fall into the relationship they had always wanted. This is a really engaging story with flawed characters, real-life problems that don’t easily get resolved, and two men that find they want to fight for the thing they regret letting go.
