Ever since the day they met Jay and Ryden have been at odds, but everyone can see what they can't, that maybe there's something more there. While guests at a wedding they uncover a possible criminal plot, Jay and Ryden must work closely together and find that an undeniable attraction has been simmering between them all along.
From the Calling His Bluff blurb:
Welcome to the Royal Flush series, where love is the ultimate gamble.
Ryden Foster is a Marine scarred by a painful past of loss and hardship, but with the support of his Four Kings Security family, he’s finally healing. As he rebuilds his life, the only thing he enjoys more than his job is sparring with Jay Starling, Ward Kingston’s flashy executive assistant. Their longstanding feud is filled with sharp banter, weaponized romance novels, and a heat neither will acknowledge.
Jay is organized, efficient, and always in control, except when it comes to Ryden, the brash Marine with a talent for getting under his skin. When a Marine wedding and a client’s murder are linked, Jay and Ryden are pulled into something far more dangerous than petty rivalry. After a chilling encounter, Jay sees a side of Ryden he wasn’t prepared for, one his heart can’t ignore.
As Ryden and Jay join the Kings on a perilous mission, surviving means risking more than just their lives. It means trusting each other with their hearts.
An enemies-to-lovers, opposites attract romance filled with found family shenanigans and high-stakes action.
SNik's review:
Second in series (The Kings:Royal Flush), can be read as a standalone but might be more fun if read in order. Coworkers. Adversarial to lovers. Found family. Slow burn. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.
For six years Jay and Ryden have been holding a feud in their office, there may be hints of attraction but annoyance and miscommunication fuels the fire. After being thrown into a dangerous situation, they spend more time together and start to realize that maybe irritating each other has been hiding something more all along.
Ryden is a total mess when it comes to communicating with Jay, and Jay is easily offended when Ryden pushes his buttons, but luckily underneath it all they are both really nice guys that everyone is secretly rooting for to get together. I enjoyed their constant back and forth, none of it was truly mean spirited, and they both are kind and thoughtful characters. Of course there are supportive secondary characters, some action, some steam, and a bunch of sweetness as these two get their HEA.
Heather's Review:
It's been a while since I've read anything by Charlie Cochet - and I can't remember why... so when I was offered Calling His Bluff, I immediately accepted! Ryden and Jay were a fun couple to watch - especially as Ryden floundered and Jay kept his snark turned up to 11... I hadn't read the first book in the series, but I easily figured out the friend/fam dynamic and the relationships that have come before... I was missing some of Jay's backstory, but that layer added to the story in my opinion... an extra secret...
The suspense story is ongoing, but ramped up strong in this book, again - I don't know what came before, but I didn't feel like I was coming in during act two.
I really enjoyed this story - the characters were great and you could see the growth in them as their relationship developed. The side characters are intriguing and I'm looking forward to seeing more HEAs as they face this ongoing threat and unravel the mystery.
