Determined Inspector Griff Denton has long been in pursuit of the illusive and accomplished thief known as Blackjack. But when he finally meets Cal, he's nothing like he expected and working together to solve a bigger threat leads them to unexpectedly fall for each other.
From the The Thief’s Mark blurb:
Auras don’t lie, but hearts can still deceive.
As his ex-wife can attest, there’s nothing Griff cares about more than his job. Thanks to his ability to read other people’s auras, he’s quickly become one of the most renowned investigators in the Sanjarkan Republic. But when he finally catches a lead for an elusive thief, he soon discovers that not every case is so simple to solve.
Growing up an orphan on the streets of Derimay, Cal never much cared for rules. Why should he when every authority figure in his life has let him down? Thankfully, his ability to change his appearance at will makes it all too easy to hide…which is why his bizarre fascination with the detective hunting him makes so little sense.
After stumbling upon an illicit void relic with mysterious ties to the government, Cal begrudgingly agrees to help Griff investigate in exchange for his freedom. Yet as they combine their skills to unravel the conspiracy, Griff finds himself wondering if there’s more to the cocky thief than meets the eye…even as Cal grapples with the very same question.
The Thief’s Mark is a slow burn MM fantasy romance featuring enemies to lovers, age gap, and a hard-won HEA. Every book in Hearts of Allaria is standalone and can be read in any order.
SNik's review:
Fourth in series (Hearts of Allaria), but can be read as a standalone. Fantasy. Age gap. Adversarial to lovers. Slow burn. Fade to black. Dual POV.
On the hunt for a well known thief, Inspector Griff Denton stumbles upon a possibly dastardly plot, and he and the accomplished thief Blackjack make a deal to work together in exchange for Blackjack’s freedom. Cal may be slightly bored as an accomplished thief, and helping the handsome inspector is at least an interesting distraction, and maybe makes him feel like he could do something besides steal for a living.
This story has two really interesting characters with amazing special abilities and some deeper aspects of their backstories which lends to their personalities. I liked that Griff sees Cal as more than a thief and that both men want to be better and do better while being together. Overall it is a slightly predictable story, but nonetheless it was super entertaining with likable characters and an engaging plot.
