Surprisingly sweet and low angst, The Waiting Game tackles self discovery and recovery from addiction respectfully. Watch these life long friends realize that the depth of their friendship runs deeper than they ever expected.
From the blurb:
Fisher Cats' Hale and Brewer Engaged: College Sweethearts or Fake Relationship?
On the eve of their first playoff game this post-season, the Toronto Fisher Cats organization sent out a press release announcing the engagement of their top D-pair.
The release insinuates the childhood friends may have been involved as far back as college and makes it clear the front office supports the relationship. “We are confident that such a longstanding relationship will be nothing but beneficial to Felix in his recovery.”
Reactions are mixed.
An anonymous inside source stated, “Legit? No way. This whole thing’s a PR stunt to soften the public’s perception of Hale.”
One fan commented, “Hale & Brewer have always been so adorable together! It’s great they finally feel comfortable being out about their relationship!”
While many fans are similarly supportive, others speculate that the announcement is tied to the Cats’ shaky play of late. “We all know they’re not gonna make it past the first round,” one fan stated. “It’s just an attempt to distract from how weak the team is.”
Adding fuel to the controversy, Hale shared an image of the players naked in bed together and captioned, “Pre-game nap with Jonah before we take on the Montreal Lynx. Go, Cats!”
PR stunt or happily engaged couple? Only time will tell.
TRIGGER WARNING: Frank discussion of alcoholism, past death of parents, and emotionally neglectful parents.
Lesetiger's review:
I love best friends to lovers stories. Jonah and Felix have known each other since childhood, are inseparable and have been through a lot together.
Felix made some bad decisions after breaking up with his girlfriend. However, a stay in a rehab facility put him back on the right track. Jonah, on the other hand, lost his parents at a very early age and grew up with his grandparents, who are very supportive of everything he does. And Jonah has been in love with Felix for ages, but since Felix is not bi, it remains a dream that Jonah could get together with Felix.
I found both Felix and Jonah very likeable. And the best secondary character in this book is Jonah's grandmother, who I very quickly took to my heart. She made me smile from time to time. But she is also very lovable in what she does. For her sake, the two of them decide to have a fake relationship. Their hockey team mates are very supportive and I loved how their relationship slowly changed. Felix and Jonah are really cute together though!
I thought it was great how Felix reflected on his rehab and learned to face up to the difficulties. Jonah was very supportive and yet he is struggling with his own problems and dealing with trauma.
I found the story wonderful and entertaining, even if it was a bit lengthy at times when I found it hard to concentrate.
James Edward Jones narrated the audiobook, and he did a great job narrating. He conveyed the emotions well and gave the characters a fitting voice. I was able to tell the protagonists apart very well. Overall, the audiobook was entertaining and I'm already looking forward to the next volume in the series!
