Faking being engaged to the man you want to climb like a tree may not have been Sam's best idea, but he can tamp down his attraction to his new roommate, he thinks. Ryker has never been interested in a man before, but something about Sam makes him want to keep him and maybe the fake relationship can be something more if he's brave enough to pursue Sam.
From the Promised Vow blurb:
Our impending vows were supposed to be fake…
Moving home to Kither Springs to help my sister with her baby wasn’t a hardship. I love being with my family, but a few months of sleeping on the couch really takes a toll on you. I desperately needed to move out, but while I was away, my hometown became ‘viral famous.’
A rush of people had clamored to our town, looking for a taste of small-town life, which means less housing. When an apartment finally becomes available, I’m not the only one interested in it, but maybe that’s not such a bad thing…
Ryker is all muscles, adorable frowns, and gooey brown eyes I want to melt into. I know better than to hit on a straight guy, so I offer to be roommates instead. It’ll be just like college.
But then the old landlady insists she only rents to couples, which leads me to blurting out that Ryker and I are engaged… future husbands-to-be. To my utter surprise, my former classmate goes along with the not-so-little white lie.
Now we’re pretending to be in love while I try not to fall in love for real.
Promised Vow is book 1 of the Promises, Promises series set in a small town with meddling neighbors and a tight community of friends and family. This book has size difference, opposites attract, and a very clingy cat.
SNik's review:
First in series (Promises, Promises). Small town. Fake relationship. Close proximity. Size difference. Found family. Slow burn. Dual POV.
Former high school acquaintances in the small town of Kither Springs, both Ryker and Sam need an apartment, and due to Sam’s quick thinking accidentally fall into faking their engagement in order to convince the landlady to rent to them. Ryker is a big and quiet construction guy that realizes his sudden attraction to vibrant and social Sam may be difficult to hide if they’re roommates, and Sam is immediately attracted to the supposed straight Ryker.
This is a lovely slow building of a close relationship, as Ryker and Sam get to know each other and share an easy friendship that evolves into more. There are a slew of supportive secondary characters, friends of Ryker’s and Sam’s family that provide some nice conversations and scenes from the small town folks. I really appreciated that both Ryker and Sam are likable characters, so sweet with each other, that Ryker has no hesitations in his first male attraction, and they move at a pace that feels right for them.
Reed Kaye's review:
This is such a warmhearted story.
Sam moves home to help his sister Lana with her baby. Sam doesn’t like sleeping on a couch so when opportunity to move out, he jumps at the chance but then finds there is one problem.
Ryker is also looking for a place and since they are rare he finds himself in a dilemma.
Sam and Ryker find themselves in a pretend relationship. Then the get to know you phase gives Sam and Ryker a chance to acknowledge the attraction they have for each other.
This is a easy read story. Both main characters are likeable and make story fun.
Who knew a desperate attempt to find an apartment would lead to fake fiancés and an all too real HEA. Ryker and Sam are adorable together. So cute and fun and perfect right off the bat. Ryker is so dang supportive and even though this is his bi-awakening, he takes it in stride and really makes the experience good for both of them. Sam is adorable and just looking to help out his family in any way that he can.
The depth of emotions and vulnerably of the two main characters makes this story that much better as it takes the premise of fake dating and turns it into something sweet and loveable.
GreenwingReads review:
Another sweet romance with loveable characters by Rye Cox.
I only recently discovered Rye Cox and this was, I think, my second time reading one of their books. I enjoyed it as much as the first and I think one Rye will be one of those authors that becomes a comfort author for me. This book, like the other one I read, featured two genuinely likeable MCs and an abundance of fun side characters. The romance was sweet, the pacing was great, and I really rooted for the romance.
I loved how patient Sam was with Ryker while he figured things out. Sam was just such a sweetheart overall. I'm glad this was book one of a series because I am excited to see more of this little town and these characters!
Heather's Review:
This was a great read and I was so excited to see that Sam, who was a side character in Taming the Tackle is getting his own HEA! What starts off as a forced proximity/roommates fake dating story becomes a slow building romance that will tug at your heart strings. It's a fairly easy, low angst read that gives the characters outside pressure to act on their attraction to one another.
I also love the way the characters are sweet and likeable - especially since Sam has endured sleeping on the couch at his grandfather's house for so long, to help his sister and niece out!
Whether you've read anything previous by Rye Cox or this is your first story, you're in for a delightful read!
