Cold as Ice is the second college hockey entry into Beth Bolden's Portland Evergreens series. Hockey teammates with opposite ways of approaching life end up forced to spend more time together and find that a surface level attraction grows stronger with the more they learn about each other.
From the blurb:
Malcolm’s all about checking off items in his Life Plan.
He’s made it to the first line on his hockey team, the Portland Evergreens. He’s made the Dean’s List the last four semesters. He’s right in line to graduate on time, and head to the pros. All steps on the ultimate goal of becoming the best front office guy in the NHL.
Elliott is the only fly in his ointment.
The younger, wilder forward parties every night, sleeping with everything with a pulse, and barely attending classes or practices.
It’s annoying, but Mal’s dealing with it, until their new coach insists Mal tutor Elliott to help him pass a class.
And until Elliott discovers Mal’s biggest secret: he’s been too busy checking off points on his life plan to get laid.
They’re fire and ice. Bad boy and virgin. They shouldn’t work at all. But the more time they spend together, on and off the ice, the more irresistible their chemistry becomes.
The more desperate Mal becomes for some of Elliott’s one-on-one tutoring—this time in bed.
But Elliott wants more than just sex. He wants to melt Mal’s icy cold shoulder and convince him there’s more to life—and love—than a plan.
SNik's Review:
Second in series (Portland Evergreens), but can be read as a standalone. Teammates. Grumpy serious/sunshine player. Dual POV.
Elliott would never admit he came to Portland University because fellow hockey player Malcolm caught his eye, and once he’s there he does everything he can to get under Malcolm’s skin. Malcolm is annoyed with the way playboy Elliott never takes anything serious, but once he starts to tutor Elliott both men see there is more underneath the surface than they realized.
Even though Elliott is a player when it comes to hookups there is something about his connection with Malcolm that erases any thoughts of someone else from his mind. At first the idea of Elliott seducing Malcolm didn’t sit right, but Elliott redeemed that with me with his caring, commitment and unwavering feelings for Malcolm as soon as they embark on a relationship. I enjoyed their opposite natures that complement each other but also allow them to grow together, their steamy times, and their absolute devotion once they decide on forever.
Heather's Review:
Beth Bolden's second foray onto the ice gives us a grumpy/sunshine, rival teammates to lovers story that throws these two boys together in a little forced proximity study time and gives them a chance to actually get to know each other better. I love how Belt Bolden balances both the hockey and the study sessions and how we unwrap each guy's history as they learn about each other and organically grow closer. I also love how they overcome each other's hang ups and fears.
This book was well paced and well thought out and gives us the chance to chear on Elliott and Malcolm as they figure out how to make a relationship work.
