Symphony of Salvation (Timber Creek Academy) by Nicky James

An impossible man, an impossible relationship, an impossible future. Niles knows he shouldn't fall for the annoying and egotistic August, but there is more to August than what is on the surface. August is struggling with his new parenting responsibilities and his attraction to beautiful and angry Niles, especially knowing he will have to leave both his daughter and Niles eventually.

From the Symphony of Salvation blurb:

Music teacher Niles Edwidge gets the shock of his life when Maestro Augustus Castellanos, a world-renowned musician and composer, shows up at Timber Creek Academy. Not only has the maestro been asked to guest-teach alongside Niles, but he’s brought his prodigy daughter and enrolled her as a student.
Niles has been waiting for the day the academy will decide to replace him. His educational background falls short of the school’s usual standards, but a revered maestro? It doesn’t make sense. Why would such a prominent figure want to teach high school music?
Fearing for his job and envious of the other man’s career, Niles doesn’t give the maestro a warm welcome, but their feud eases when Niles learns the respectable musician is struggling with a mountain of problems and would prefer to be anywhere but Timber Creek.
As the truth about August’s troubled life surfaces, so too does a secret he has carried for decades. As a self-proclaimed repressed bisexual, August rarely allows himself the freedom to explore his sexuality, but an undeniable attraction to Timber Creek’s music teacher tests his resolve. He can’t afford to fall for Niles. He has a life and responsibilities outside Timber Creek.
The minute his obligations are fulfilled, he’s out the door.
Unless he finds a reason to stay…

**Symphony of Salvation is an MM romance novel with mature MCs, a single dad who is also a repressed bisexual, and two clashing personalities. Oh, and lots of music.**

SNik's review:

Second in series (Timber Creek Academy), but can be read as a standalone. Adversarial to lovers. Single dad. Mature characters. Slow burn. Dual POV.

New to full custody of his daughter, famous classical musician August uproots his life to get her into a private high school where he is supposed to guest teach in the music department. Niles loves his job as a music teacher, but feels incredibly threatened and also attracted to the famous conductor/composer, losing his job would be bad but breaking his heart over a straight man that will eventually leave is impossible.

This story had so many layers to the realistic main characters, flawed with some redeeming qualities, making mistakes and regretting them, selfishness tempered with the unhappy sacrifices you sometimes make for love. Beautifully and emotionally written, August and Niles struggle in relating to each other while also earnestly trying to forge something from an initial attraction to a relationship fraught with pitfalls. Such a wonderful read, showing that sometimes a character that isn’t fully likable, almost too human in their faults, can find and grab onto a special love.
