These Dark Hours by Lyra Haven

Alex has been keeping the ghosts he sees a secret for years, and dating a police detective may not be his smartest move, but his attraction to Donovan is hard to resist. Donovan feels like there can be a future with bookstore owner Alex, but when his name begins to be connected with some recent deaths he has to decide if he can stand beside Alex no matter what.

From the These Dark Hours blurb:

Alex Copeland just wants a quiet, normal life. Too bad the ghosts of Lowery’s Crossing have other plans.

After fleeing the ghosts of my past, all I want is peace. I run my bookstore, hang out with my friends, then go home to my fat ginger cat and my roommate, Charlie. Completely normal. Just how I like it.

Except Charlie is a ghost with a trashy reality TV addiction and sometimes, dead people appear in my bedroom. I help them move on, then tip off the police. Anonymously, of course. After all, finding one body is a coincidence. Four is a prison sentence.

The last thing I need in my life is more complications, so of course, the new man in town who flirts with me over coffee turns out to be a detective. I should stay away, but how can I, when his touch sets me on fire like never before?

When a new spirit throws me into the path of a killer, though, Donovan Parker may be the only person who can save me from joining the ghosts of Lowery’s Crossing for good.

SNik's review:

Standalone. Paranormal. Hurt/comfort. Found family. Slow burn. Dual POV.

Alex has been seeing ghosts for years, but it’s not so bad in his small town, and even if his best friend and roommate is a ghost, nobody has to know. But Alex’s attraction to the new police detective in town could be a problem when Alex gets connected to some recent deaths, including one horrific murder.

I was instantly drawn to both main characters, Alex as a sympathetic and likable guy that tries to help people but has a secret he can’t share and is so lonely, and Donovan is dedicated to his job as well as having a genuine attraction and interest in Alex. The ghosts and the mystery were compelling, along with the supportive secondary cast of characters and wonderful building of a relationship between Alex and Donovan. I really appreciated that these two seemed really to complement each other and Donovan is supportive and caring full stop when it comes to Alex. Really an entertaining read with an equally sweet romance.

Angel's review:

This book surprised me in the best way possible! This was such a unique twist on paranormal romance and I absolutely loved it!

Alex can see ghosts, not only that but they come to him for help. Usually they lead him to their bodies, and once he finds them, he helps them pass on. He can't tell anyone about what he can see because he's worried they won't believe him like how his mom didn't, the only person who ever did was his aunt who's passed on.
When one ghost in particular ends up being a murder victim though he's forced to fess up about his abilities, and the fact he's called in tips about where other bodies have been means he has to tell the truth to Donovan and hope he believes him.

This story, these characters, the plotline, the mystery, all of these things were absolutely fantastic!!! Donovan is such a sweetheart who cares about Alex, even when they first started flirting with each other he cared about the shy man who loves books. Donovan and Alex has such strong chemistry together, their flirty remarks and playful dialogue , along with the serious and heartfelt moments helped with the feeling of them really fitting well together. They just fit together so well, and I was so happy that Alex now has someone to lean on when he gets visits from ghosts.

Even though Donovan was skeptical at first about Alex seeing ghosts, he still supported him and didn't immediately dismiss what Alex was telling him. That scene where Alex tells Donovan the truth was such a monumental point where things could've gone poorly, but Donovan just listened and supported Alex and that was so lovely!

The mystery surrounding Andre's death was done very well, it was interesting and intriguing to try to put clues together. But honestly? I never could've predicted what ended up happening, it was a huge surprise in the best way, I thought it was written amazingly!

I teared up a bit at the end because of Alex finally coming clean to those he cares about and them actually believing him, and because of what happened with Charlie. This story was amazing and I highly recommend for you to give this story a chance.
