Crossed Sticks (Buffalo Warriors Hockey Book 1) by Ryan Taylor & Joshua Harwood

A new series from Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood, with of course hockey, but also two men trying to avoid heartbreak but willing to take another risk to see if their chemistry is as off the charts as it first seems. Harper and Luca try to go the distance and find sometimes it takes some work to get your HEA.

From the Crossed Sticks blurb:

Two scarred souls finding love when they least expect it.

Harper

I wasn’t a keeper.

Guys just didn’t pick me, and after one too many threw me away, my heart couldn’t take it anymore.

When I was traded to the Buffalo Warriors, I knew things wouldn’t be any different.

Skate. Score goals. Work out. Repeat. That’s my life.

I’m living the dream by playing professional hockey, and I have some amazing friends.

I’m happy. Really, I am. Or at least I’m trying to be.

Until the night I run into Luca.

Luca

I had love once, only to have it ripped away when he married someone else.

Problem was, I never got my heart back.

I’ve built walls so high no one can touch me. I’m only interested in hookups, one and done.

And I can’t forget lacrosse, because it’s all I have.

I’m fine. Or at least I’m trying to be.

Until the night I run into Harper.

One chance encounter sparks a flame that consumes both men in the most delicious of ways. But when shadows from the past threaten to pull them apart, will they survive, or will their hearts be shattered again?

Crossed Sticks is a romance that’s anything but easy—and worth every moment. While the story is high on angst and deals with serious topics such as depression and anxiety, you can also expect witty banter, hilarious text conversations, public hookups, friends with benefits, grand romantic gestures, and exciting hockey scenes. Even better, there’s high heat, light kink with tons of dirty talk, found family, and a Happy Ever After that will leave you breathless.

Crossed Sticks is book one of an exciting new series of standalones, Buffalo Warriors Hockey.

SNik's review:

First in series (Buffalo Warriors Hockey). Friends with benefits to lovers. Light BDSM. Found family. High angst. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.

Transferred to a new team and living in a new city, pro hockey player Harper is hoping for a new start, even if staying with plain hookups has kept his heart protected so far. Luca feels ready to move on from being in love with his best friend years ago, and he’s never felt chemistry like he does with Harper, but they both are wary of anything with strings attached so they tread carefully into friendship with the possibility of more.

This story is filled with high heat, Harper and Luca can’t get enough of each other, but both really want something more and hope to find it together. There are mature conversations and realistic examples of learning about yourself and trying to have a healthier mindset when dealing with a partner. This book is filled with supportive secondary characters, sweet dates, spicy encounters, and two men that are willing to work to get their HEA.

Heather's Review:

Ooh.. are we getting a lacrosse spin-off next?  I absolutely adored getting to know Luca and I'd love to see more lacrosse, but I digress - this book is firmly a hockey book featuring Harper - and in true Taylor/Harwood style it was excellent!  Angsty, steamy and still sweet, we see an instant connection, a chance for some exploration and a dash of kink that makes this book well worth the read!

I truly enjoyed watching these two fall - and also communicate with each other in a mature way as they built their relationship... no games (other than lacrosse and hockey), lots of found family and good friends and a few Bethesda Barracudas cameos,
