Echoes of Earthshine (Soul Court Ascension Book 4) by Mel Harding-Shaw

Can a trust horribly broken ever be forgiven and recovered? Mica and Ra had the beginning of something special but politics and loyalty tore them apart. Now Ra is back in Mica's life, and all of Mica's possessive feelings conflict with the impossibility of them becoming something more.

From the Echoes of Earthshine blurb:

If you insist on coming to my court, you are mine until you leave.

The only reason the winged Earth Lord Mica agreed to let the insidious human accompany the elemental girl sent to his court for training was desperation. He fell for Ra's charm and seduction once and the man betrayed his trust. Ra is a too-beautiful distraction he can't afford, but his technology is the only hope of healing his sentient stronghold.

Any feelings Ra had for Mica disappeared the moment the elemental turned against his chosen family. Ra doesn't regret extorting Mica, but it's making tensions high now he's living in his home. Ra's focus is providing solace to the niece of his heart Kaia as she trains and solving the puzzle of the broken stronghold before it puts her in danger. If only he wasn't so tempted to provide solace to the broken elemental lord as well.

As Mica's people prepare to celebrate 1,000 years of his rule, they have no idea how close they are to ruin. If Ra and Mica can't work together to save the stronghold, the backblast from its death will send a shockwave of destructive magic across a world already reeling from disaster.

Echoes of Earthshine is a standalone MM enemies to lovers paranormal romance featuring forced proximity, a reluctantly possessive earth lord, and a man who’s all sunshine until you threaten the people he loves. It takes place in the Melded Earths world immediately following the events of the Soul Court Ascension trilogy.

SNik's review:

Standalone set in the author’s Soul Court Ascension universe. Paranormal. Friendly to adversary to lovers. Second chance. Slow burn. Dual POV.

Ra has a complicated history with the lord of the Earth Court, but getting permission to be near his niece Ra will agree to anything, and perhaps helping heal the stronghold will patch some of his and Mica’s adversarial relationship. Ra’s betrayal after the promising start of their relationship has broken Mica’s trust, but having his possible mate living on Earth is a struggle that Mica is not ready for, especially while he is trying to maintain his leadership position and protect his people.

This story does have a background built in the Soul Court Ascension trilogy, however the author does an excellent job of informing about the past so it’s not necessary to have read the previous book. I especially enjoyed every moment of push and pull between Mica and Ra, and even though there is a slight power imbalance it felt like Ra gave just as good as he got. The world building was interesting, the secondary characters were supportive as a found family, and the intense feelings between Mica and Ra were well written. Overall a thoroughly entertaining read.
