Pining for the Prince (Fang and Fae Book 1) by Rebecca Cohen

A new series from Rebecca Cohen with a vampire detective and his fae prince business partner as they hide their feelings for each other while trying to investigate a stolen gem that has serious repercussions for the whole supernatural community.

From the Pining for the Prince blurb:

Sometimes being a vampire sucks, and not in a good way. Gwil might have accepted his vampire afterlife didn’t come with rubbing shoulders with the elite and endless wealth, despite what his sire might alluded to, but working as a private detective isn’t all bad. Being dragged into Vampire Council business is annoying at times but there are worst things—the worst being years of pining after his best friend, business partner, and fae prince, Hyax.

Spending so much time with Hyax is getting harder, and now Hyax has told his parents that Gwil is his betrothed to stop them from trying to marry him off, everything gets even more difficult. Add in meddling family members on both sides to fake dating a prince, a missing crown jewel, and rogue flower fairies, Gwil thinks things can’t get any more complicated until they do…

Pining for the Prince is the first of Fang & Fae, a MM Paranormal Romance series, where a vampire and a fae prince go from best friends to lovers while solving mysteries along the way.

SNik's review:

First in series (Fang and Fae). Paranormal urban fantasy. Best friends to lovers. Fake relationship. Slow burn. Dual POV.

Gwil is a vampire and a private detective that gets to work with his best friend Prince Hyax, which has been great except for the secret crush he has had on the fae prince for years. When a lucrative job comes along Gwil and Hyax get dragged into something much more complicated than a simple snatch and grab, they have to navigate political intrigue and personal jealousies in order to come out on top.

The world build was certainly entertaining, and we get peeks into both Gwil and Hyax’s pasts, although I would have loved to see more about their friendship and how that developed. I really enjoyed the mystery and investigation in the story as all kinds of different people and clues intersected. Gwil and Hyax finally get their act together when pretending to be in a relationship turns into them communicating their true romantic feelings and they are determined to take their chance at being together. I am invested in seeing where this series takes Gwil and Hyax.

Rogue's Review:

- Series
- Paranormal
- Fake relationship
- Best friends to lovers

This is the first in the Fang and Fae series, I understand it's set in the same world as another series, but I read and enjoyed this as a standalone.  Gwil is a vampire and Hyax is a fae prince, best friends who have been working together for years in a detective agency, and both have also been pining for the other.  I didn't really understand at first what time this was set in, whether it was victorian or present time - I think that was more me not paying enough attention though, as Gwil was turned during that time.  I also didn't really understand the vampire social hierarchy, and why it was that Gwil was sort of looked down on.  Maybe if I'd read the connected series it would be clearer to me.

I liked both Gwil and Hyax though, even though I really just wanted them to talk to each other, already.  Hyax's parents I wasn't so keen on, forcing him into an arranged marriage just because they wanted the political connections, and then the way they treated Gwil even though they were told he was Hyax's betrothed - fake at first (although they didn't know that) and then not so fake when they finally woke up and got together.  I didn't really feel the chemistry between the two, it was kind of glossed over but they have the long best friend bond to build on.  I liked the detective aspect of the story, and Gwil finally realising he's where he's supposed to be in the end.

I liked this although there are a few loose ends that I hope we get to tie up, and spend more time in Gwil and Hyax's world.
