Grave Misfortune (Fortune Favors the Fae) by Nazri Noor

Orphium may be seen as a swindler but he needs to survive and people never miss what they've forgotten. Leoric may be hiding in the small town of Barrowdeep, but he finds fulfillment protecting the townspeople, even if it's from tricky fae.

From the Grave Misfortune blurb:

Darkness sleeps beneath Barrowdeep.

War-weary mercenary Leoric has traded his sword for a shovel, burying the undead blight that plagues the little town of Barrowdeep. Now he fights for the living instead of against them.

Fae trickster Orphium travels from town to town, stealing human trinkets and memories through games of chance. He's desperate to fill the hollow in his heart, but the hunger never goes away.

Barrowdeep is ripe for the picking, except the nosy local gravedigger keeps interfering. But when Leoric unearths an ancient fae artifact, Orphium knows he’ll stop at nothing to possess the powerful coin.

And the undead will stop at nothing to possess him.

Orphium and Leoric must fight the undead together before tensions and their shadowy pasts rise to the surface — and before an even darker evil awakens beneath Barrowdeep.

SNik's review:

Part of a multi-author series (Fortune Favors the Fae), but can be read as a standalone. Paranormal fantasy. Adversaries to lovers. Found family. Slow burn. Dual POV.

Orphium is a traveling fae, not having a home of his own and relying on games of chance to fulfill himself. Protecting the town and its people from ghouls fits the war-weary Leoric, but he doesn’t trust Orphium who has secrets like Leoric does and is too much of an attractive distraction as well. For a large part of the story Leoric and Orphium are at odds, with a fae coin also causing them conflict, and the ever constant danger the ghouls present.

I really enjoyed learning of both Leoric and Orphium’s pasts which made their current circumstances understandable and brought them closer since they both have lived through hard experiences. This was a fun, well done quick world build, with two characters that find something meaningful together, secondary characters willing to embrace newcomers to their small town, and a little action and redemption to round out a whirlwind romance.

Rogue's review:

- multi-author series
- enemies to lovers
- fantasy

This is part of the multi-author Fortune Favours The Fae series, but can be read as a standalone. This time the coin meddles in the lives of Leoric and Orphium. Orphium is fae, and a trickster of sorts as he travels the realm gathering memories to keep and feed on as he's lost his own. Leoric is gravekeeper of a smal village with a ghoul problem. I liked both men, Leoric right away as all he wants is a quiet life away from fighting, and he's made that in Barrowdeep for himself. Orphium is a little more of a lost soul, on the surface he's a bit selfish but I liked how quickly he came to appreciate Barrowdeep and its' people.

These two hate each other on sight, they're both complete opposites and there's plenty of snark between them, and lots of romantic tension too. There's a great cast of supporting characters too, from the innkeeper to the two town guards and the local priest - there's definitely more to him than meets the eye. Throw in a mystery with the undead, and this is a fun story that moves along quickly enough to keep me turning the pages to see how it's resolved. There is an HEA of sorts, with perhaps an unresolved thread or two but nothing that I couldn't live with.

This was a new to me author, and on the strength of this I'd definitely look for more.
