Cicadas: A Totally Ordinary Epic Love Story by Avery Cockburn

CICADAS: A TOTALLY ORDINARY EPIC LOVE STORY is a third chance romance of two men who can't let go of their first love. Sometimes it takes more than one chance to get love right.

From the blurb:

What if you had a second chance at a second chance?

One day in 1987

Budding scientist Joel and cowboy-quarterback Danny meet amid the arrival of seventeen-year cicadas. Like the loud, lusty insects, the boys bond through song, reveling in the heat and hope of early summer—until fate tears them apart.

One night in 2004

During the next wave of cicadas, Joel and Dan find their connection stronger than ever. Boyhood fascination becomes an irresistible (and inconvenient!) passion, one that will unite and divide them for another seventeen years.

One love to last a lifetime

At the dawn of 2021, Joel and Daniel reach out, and in a heartbeat, the years and miles between them fall away. But to make their next reunion last forever, they must face their troubled pasts and embrace their boundless future.

Cicadas is a uniquely American, ridiculously romantic tale about memory, nostalgia, and the courage to dance into an untold tomorrow.

Molly Otto's Review:

A love story 34 years in the making. Joel & Danny met as 17 year Olds on the verge of becoming men and falling in that way only young love can, but life wasn't in their favor. Fast forward seventeen years, and they get their second chance only to realize it's not yet their time again.

Now, here we are 17 years later once again, and the pandemic has hit, and these two men get their third chance to make it right. Neither has gotten over their first love even when so much has happened, so it's no surprise when they see each other once again it transports them back to how they were at 17. It's a beautiful love story over so many years that shows us when it's your time it's your time.

What I didn't love was all the covid/political talk. I'm sorry I lived through that and didn't want to again. The author handled it well. it just was not something I wanted to read in a romance novel. Overall, beautiful love story. I just didn't need that part.
