Audio Review: When I First Saw Red (Soldiers and Mercenaries), Book 2 By Kasia Bacon, Narrated by Cornell Collins

Jacquie listened to When I First Saw Red and called the ending "surprisingly sweet."

From the blurb:

Red: Lázhien’s human. A common Imperial soldier. And my soulmate. How could fate get it so wrong? The demon in me craves this bond with every shred of his being. He pushes me to accept it. This time I won’t yield to his demands.

Lázhien: Red’s a lust demon, a whore and a stuck-up snob. The most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. Pain in the arse. And he hates my guts. I’d be an idiot to pursue him. Yet something about him compels me to make him mine.

When I First Saw Red is a complete and stand-alone short novel with an HEA ending, featuring a couple of reluctant fated soulmates - a demon and a human - trying and failing to defy destiny.

Jacquie's Review:

Cornell Collins narrates When I First Saw Red so well. Each of the voices are distinctive so there's no mixing up pov's whilst listening which can happen even with the best of narrators. I also enjoy the inflections put on some of the sentences. It makes for a great listen and it added to the emotions of the words.

Story wise, there's a lot of heat and they deny their bond to begin with, but once they get together? The sweetness! I just really liked how once they were in it, they went fully in.

Oh and the epilogue was utterly adorable and made me laugh and smile throughout. Probably just as well I was on my own while I listened to it!

I loved it and would absolutely listen to it again.

Rating: 5 Stars for both story and narration.

Nicole's Review:

I can’t believe how much detail Kasia Bacon packed into this short story. The romance between Red and Lázhien was sweet and so hot.

KB did an amazing job of creating detailed characters with the perfect amount of smut for a courtesan story.

I appreciated that we got such good backstories for both characters at points that didn’t feel rushed or forced for such a short story.

The narration was also on point. Cornell Collins did an excellent job of creating distinct voices for each character.

Rating: 5 Stars
