Safe (A Constantine Brothers Novella, Book 3) by Rina Saint

Being home should feel safe, but Roman is still haunted by his captivity. Lucas can't seem to reach him, but they cling to each other as they try and find a new normal that works for them both.

From the blurb:

For years, I wasn’t human and didn’t want to be. It was easier to be the Beast, pacing in my cage until my handlers let me out to fight. I didn’t speak, didn’t have a name. My existence was brutal, but it was simple. I understood it. Accepted it.

But everything changed when Lucas was thrown into my cage with me, when I claimed him as my own—when I realized I would do anything to protect him. That meant getting us out, to somewhere safe.

And that’s what I did. That’s where we are now, in a good, safe place. Except, it doesn’t feel good to me. I don’t belong here. Nothing about me makes sense here.

I’m trying to make it work. I want Lucas to be happy. But the past keeps intruding, and the problem is … I want it to. I make sense in that dark space. But Lucas doesn’t, and I don’t want him there. So what the hell am I supposed to do?

* Safe focuses on Roman and Lucas and should be read after Possession and Confession. It contains dark and potentially triggering content. A content list can be found in the ebook sample.

SNik's review:

Third in series (Constantine Brothers), must be read in order. Novella. Established couple. Found family. Hurt/comfort. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.

Being back home with his brother doesn’t make Roman feel safe. He still has dark moments, can’t forget his captivity, and only wants to protect Lucas.

This story was a heart wrenching peek into Lucas and Roman struggling with their new normal but coping together. I really appreciated that they remain close, Lucas is patient and understanding while Roman treasures Lucas as he tries to overcome his PTSD. We get plenty of steam, some action, and some emotional communication between Lucas and Roman but also Roman opening up more to his brother Vitali. This was such an entertaining, quick read. I would be thrilled to read something further down the line where we get to see what kind of HEA Lucas and Roman have fought for, as well as Quinn and Vitali.
