Evan (The Wild Edges Book 2) by Lark Taylor

A past meeting that ended up in a years long grudge that can't be forgotten but maybe can be forgiven. Can the steady support of Evan be enough for Reid to let him in? I love this series so much and Evan may just be my favorite member of this wolf pack!

From the blurb:

Thirteen years ago, I made a terrible mistake.

One I'll never repeat again.

When I first met Reid, I failed to see the signs that were right in front of me. He asked me to do one thing–take him away and keep him safe.

I turned my back on him.

Now I have to live with the guilt and shame of knowing I let him down. He can't forgive me, and that's okay.

Because I'll never forgive myself.

When Reid's family comes to take him away, I have a chance to redeem myself. I can keep him safe. But the more I watch him, the more I fall for the man who doesn't see his self-worth.

Trouble is, can either of us forget the past in favour of the future? Or did my mistake all those years ago cost me any chance with the man of my dreams?

Either way, I'm not giving up until I find out.

Evan is a heartfelt hurt/comfort, M/M shifter x human romance. The second in the Wild Edges series, these books are best enjoyed in order. Each story follows a new couple, and always ends in a HEA.

Angel's review:

I've been looking forward to Evan's story ever since Lark announced we were getting his story next, and let me tell you, it was worth the wait! Evan and Reid's story is heartbreaking in the beginning, so much so you're left unsure if they'll have a happily ever after together. Well, I'm here to tell you that while they had a long road getting there, they did eventually end up happy.

I am obsessed with Lark's writing, it's sooo good! There are always so many details describing the characters, the scenery, vivid account of the characters pasts, and she has a unique take on fated mates and shifter, which I LOVE! I absolutely adored Evan, he is truly such a sweetheart, he's kind hearted and Soo caring. When he found out who Reid was and what he went through he was devastated and heartbroken, but he was determined to make it up to Reid any way he could. He's truly so sweet and special.

Now, as for Reid... I appreciated the neruodivergent rep as well as representing ADHD as well, however, Reid's character just didn't do it for me. I understand why he was upset and angry with Evan in the beginning, but he just kept throwing insults at Evan and throwing the past in his face all while saying he knows that it wasn't truly Evan's fault. I know that sometimes trauma and hurt doesn't listen to logic, but it felt a bit redundant to have him constantly hate on Evan when Evan was doing his best to make things right. Plus, there wasn't anything Evan could've done in the past, he was there representing his pack, he couldn't just take a child...

That being said, once Reid let himself actually get to know Evan, I will admit that they do make a good pairing together. I also really appreciate how mental health was featured and showcased in a respectful and brilliant way, mental health representation is SO important so I'm glad it was apart of this book.

I want to say that I absolutely adore Evan's parents, they are so adorable, fierce, protective, and so kind! They are just perfect characters! I am very interested in what is going on between Logan and two humans though... Hopefully we'll learn more info in Callan's book!

I'm very excited to see where this series goes next and what Lark has in store for these characters next.

SNik's review:

Second in series (The Wild Edges), best if read in order. Paranormal. Mates. Hurt/comfort. Found family. Slow burn. Partial concurrent timeline with the first book. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.

Reid will never be comfortable around shifters again, and will never forgive the wolf shifter that left him to be abused by his family, but taking up sanctuary in the land of the McCarthy clan inevitably leads to seeing Evan again. Once Evan finds out about Reid’s past he can’t forgive himself, so if he has to secretly protect Reid from afar for the rest of his life he will do so.

Evan and Reid have a long road to forgiveness, filled with guilt, regret, trauma, and healing. I absolutely love a cinnamon roll protector and the feisty person that begrudgingly accepts their fierce type of affection, and Evan and Reid really felt like they were meant to be together. All the supportive secondary characters were great, the found family, both shifters and human were so important for both Evan and Reid. I appreciated Evan’s patience and constant presence, and Reid’s ability to try and work through his trauma to find happiness. Overall a sweet read and good addition to this series that I am very interested in seeing more of.

Jacqueleen the Reading Queen's review:

Took me a bit to start this one because I just could not stop staring at this gorgeous tatted male on the cover. I'll be honest. After seeing him on the front I don't know how Reid held back as long as he did. Not only is Evan fine AF, he's also one of the kindest shifters ever. Makes sense since he was brought up in a home with parents who absolutely adored him to the point his life goal was to find a mate and be as happy as his parents 500 years later.

Reid was a difficult character for me to bond with. I can't imagine the pain and suffering he'd been subjected to in his old clan. I also feel like he was justified in lashing out because hiding those feelings would just fester and make things worse. What I didn't like was how much his actions hurt Evan. And I know. I know it isn't Reid's fault for acting the way he did for a large portion of the book, but hearing how much it was hurting Evan and his wolf made me want to cry. Especially knowing that the only reason Reid was holding back was because of how he was treated in his past.

I was so happy when Reid began to soften towards Evan. They needed each other. Both were in a dark place and both needed the other to help them drag themselves back into the light. As usual, the entire McCarthy clan was behind these two every step of the way. In fact, I think I've figured out the mates of the last two remaining wolves of the inner circle. Calan's book is next and based on that epilogue his book is going to take a whole lot of work for him and his mate to find their way. I cannot freaking wait!
