Rumpelstilzchen (The GriMM Tales) by Sam Northman

We finally get a more in-depth look into not only the Evil Queen's life and evil ways, but we also get to see that the Queen's Shadow isn't as evil as portrayed in the previous books.

From the blurb:

Rumpelstilzchen, ruthless enforcer for the Queen and powerful shadow geist, is missing an important part of himself—his Heart.

Enslaved by the evil Queen through black magick, Rumpelstilzchen’s only shot at freedom is to find his Heart—and claim it. What he doesn’t expect is for it to beat inside the beguiling son of a miller.
Boy is imprisoned in the palace cells for his family’s failure to pay the royal tithe, and unless he can deliver on his father’s impossible promise and spin a sack of straw into gold, he will die at sunrise. Awaiting his fate, Boy thought his biggest problem would be the Queen coming after his head, but when her Shadow comes for his heart instead, he finds himself caught in a lethal attraction.
Having expected to simply carve his Heart from the prisoner’s chest, Rumpelstilzchen’s plans are thwarted when his shadow magick wraps protectively around the sun-kissed skin of the beautiful young man.
Can Rumpelstilzchen find a way to break free of the black magick, claim his Heart, andkeep his precious human alive?

Please bring an emotional support candle, this darker romance features a shadow daddy in search of his Heart, the stank confines of a prison cell, and the brave Boy who would risk it all for their happily ever after…

Each book set in the GriMM fairytale world can be read as a standalone and contains its own Happily Ever After story. Though you’ll definitely want to read each one, as the tales are connected to each other in multiple magical ways.

Angel's review:

Whenever Rumple appeared in the other GriMM Tales books, he was always portrayed as someone who just followed orders but enjoyed causing others pain.. Whereas in this book, we discover that he has no choice but to follow his orders, the Evil Queen has cursed him to always do what she asks whether he wants to or not. The only way to break free from the queen is by learning his true name, and finding his heart.

I liked this book, I enjoyed seeing a different side to Rumple and learning more about him and how his shadow magic works. I also liked how despite Boy's situation, he still did what he could to fight back against the Queen and help Rumple break free from her.

There is a slight daddy/boy dynamic going on which I didn't love as that isn't my personal cup of tea, but I still enjoyed the story itself. I absolutely loved how at the end of this book Rumple introduced us to a certain prince and the other men living with him... (The next book in this amazing multi-author series!) All in all, a great story! And much better than the original fairytale.

Lori C's review:

Rumple is the evil queen’s pet. He is her shadow geist, he works at her whim, usually killing or retrieving stolen goods. But he doesn’t do it for her, he does it because he is part of her collection. She has him trapped and all he can think about is finding his heart and breaking free of her black magicks.

Boy is from the far east region where magick and the old ways remain firm. That’s why Boy has no name. His grandmother told him stories of the power of knowledge. Boy listened to the stories and knew no fear.

When Boy turns up in the Queen’s prison, Rumple goes to scare him. It’s what he does. Boy commands his shadows and that has never happened to Rumple before. Is Boy his Heart? How can this be?

Oh this story. I couldn’t get enough. The author went slightly back in the timeline and we got to see Red lost on his excursion. The majority of the story is Rumple and Boy’s and it is enchanting. The power between them is incredible from the start. I quickly began to see Rumple in a different light. I don’t think he is all bad, I think he was forced to be bad by the evil queen. I loved the gentleness that Rumple has with Boy, the overwhelming feeling he has to protect him. My favorite part is when Boy protects Rumple. I love that the author foreshadowed the next and final story of Snow White and the Seven Little Miners. This series has been such a great read so far. Rumplestilzchen though may just have my heart.
