The Ferryman usually transports people to their deaths, but what happens when the Ferryman saves someone from death instead? That's precisely what Charon and Hector's story is about. Meeting the monster that ferries people to the prison, Hector does not realize he now is the sole focus of Charon even as they both are fighting desperately to survive. Now, Hector may have help in finding his sister, but can they have a future together when the truth will surely destroy them?
From the blurb:
Surviving is all I’ve ever known.
Abandoned young, I was left to fend for myself in a place ruled by fear and control. Silver runs everything—rations, medicine, currency—and those like me, carriers of the infection, are treated less than human.
Everyone I love is gone.
All that’s left is my sister, but she vanished into Zone T years ago, and I won’t stop until I find her. Even if it means stepping onto his boat.
An eye for an eye.
They call him the Ferryman. A monster with a bird of prey, tasked with bringing criminals across the river. Those who board his vessel never return.
But he’s not what I expected. There are secrets behind his quiet stare and a history soaked in blood. His gentle touch draws me in deeper than I meant to go. The closer I get to the truth, the more he unravels parts of me I thought were long dead.
The Ferryman wants to claim my soul, but I don't know if I could ever be his.
All I am is...rotten.
Rotten is a full-length MM dark dystopian horror romance as part of the 1nf3ction shared world collaboration. Each book is a standalone containing themes and situations not intended for readers under the age of 18. Both characters are consenting adults. This story features a mute, morally grey cinnamon roll, Greek mythology themes, a talking crow too smart for her own good, and a guaranteed HEA.
SNik's review:
Part of a multi-author series (Mayhem Manuscripts Season One: 1nf3ction), but can be read as a standalone. Dystopian. Hurt/comfort. Instalove. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.
It’s been years of the world living with the infection that turns people feral and zombie-like, and Hector has barely survived and is now intent on finding the sister that left him behind. But meeting Charon as he’s ferried to the nearby prison takes its toll, and now Hector has to rely on a man who doesn’t speak and is definitely focused on Hector in a way he’s not used to.
This story is filled with horror and two main characters that have suffered in order to survive in a very cruel world. Hector doesn’t comprehend Charon’s kindness at first but as he experiences Charon’s possessive caring he finds himself falling equally into their intense connection just as hard. It’s not really clear why Charon is instantly taken with Hector, but these two men finding each other and fighting together was its own kind of romance in a horrible world. Thoroughly entertaining, well written with compelling characters and an eventual HEA that was well deserved.
Angel's review:
""Now, home has a heartbeat. A laugh, a sharp tongue, and the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen.""
When I first started reading this book I was a bit lost at first as there was a lot going on in the beginning. However, the more I kept reading the more I understood what was happening and the more I ended up enjoying reading this story. Bree's book in this 1nf3ction series is different from the first one in the sense that Bree wrote about a different part of this rotting world. One about a prison that tortures people for entertainment, that's run by someone Hector never expected.
I'm not going to say who the Judge is, that would be a major spoiler, but I will say that it might surprise you who it ended up being. Hector and Charon's story isn't full of happiness and rainbows, it's dark and gritty, and everything they have with each other and their feelings for one another was fought for and earned. Their road hasn't been easy but they were able to make the best out of a bad situation. Hector, Charon, and Nyx, their murder bird found their own little slice of paradise that they made their own. And at the end of the day, isn't that what most of us want? Someone who will fight for us when we can't fight ourselves, someone to fight alongside us when we can, and someone to fight for... Hector and Charon definitely represent that through their relationship and actions towards each other.
What started out as Hector's nightmare losing his foot and being trapped on a 'Monster's" boat, ended up becoming something he could have never dared hoped to dream.
Bree said it best, ""Never forget that even lost souls can be found. You're the one steering the boat, and you have the power to change course.""
