Only You by Nicole Dykes

Remy and Tatum have never forgotten that one important friend they had in foster care. Now they have a chance to renew the friendship, but the strong attraction they have feels like more than just friendly. Both men have had a rough upbringing and have to fight to complete the connection with their special person.

From the blurb:

Tatum

My best friend is settled. He met the love of his life and was granted guardianship of his younger siblings. I’ve had the goal to help him for what seems like forever, and now that things are good for him, I should feel complete, right?
But there’s always been a piece missing for me. Has been for a long time.
Something I don’t think I can ever fix.
And then suddenly, that part of my past shows back up in my life. He should hate me. I hate me. But that’s the thing about Remy . . .
He’s far too good for this world, and I’m once again terrified I’ll break him.
Because that’s what I do.

Remy
I want to forget about my past. It’s my life’s goal.
I’m not that weak little boy trapped in foster care anymore. I’m stronger now. I’m the principal at a major school in the Kansas City area. I’ve grown into the man I knew I could be.
I don’t talk about the past. I refuse to.
But then it’s shoved into my face, and I can’t look away. I can’t walk away like he did all those years ago.
Sometimes I despise this stubborn streak inside me. I should stay away. He has.
But there’s this pull there—even after all these years.
I can put on a show for everyone else, but when he’s around, I start to crack.
Why can’t I be strong when I’m around him?
Tatum. The only one who sees right through me.

SNik's review:

Standalone but might be more fun if read after Only Temporary. Former childhood friends. Hurt/comfort. Found family. Slow burn. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.

Tatum regrets losing his friendship with Remy, they were foster kids that crossed paths several times until Remy pushed Tatum away. Now years later Remy is a high school principal and Tatum runs into him again helping out his best friend’s siblings, so they take a chance to renew their friendship.

This story certainly hits all the notes for a romance where when you meet that special someone nothing else matters. I appreciated that Tatum doesn’t hesitate over his first time attraction to a man, he is happy to be in Remy’s orbit and if it never becomes more than friendship so be it. Remy has to overcome his past and the way he has built his personal life to allow himself to trust Tatum and perhaps build something that will last forever. I enjoyed the parts of this story where both men almost immediately commit to something long term, their honest communication, and not wanting to pressure the other. Both Remy and Tatum are likable, sweet, and unselfish, really great characters getting an HEA.

Heather's Review:

It's always amazing how resilient former foster kids can be, and when they form a special connection it remains.. no matter what life throws at them.  We meet Remy and Tatum when they are both in a better place and I love that they fall back into being good friends who can communicate on different levels... to the point where you feel like their souls are connected!

Please heed the content warnings if you need them - but Nicole Dykes handles the difficult parts with careful measure and lets the characters grow stronger for it... this book is definitely slow burn, but worth the wait!
