Hansel and Gerhardt's story is full of strength, determination, resiliency, desserts of course, and the power of love.
From the blurb:
Oh look! A house made entirely of sweets! Things finally seem to be looking up for Hansel and Gerhardt…
Dropped into a lonely cottage deep in the woods as a boy, Gerhardt would give anything to escape. He hates his life, he hates his abusive step father. He’s sure his irritatingly handsome step brother despises him for the share of food he takes, and even more for frequently angering their dangerous father. But Gerhardt’s never once learned to back down from a fight, no matter what it costs him.
Hansel is riddled with guilt for the life Gerhardt’s been forced to live. He knows his father’s actions aren’t his fault, but he’s sure Gerhardt hates him for it. Still, he can’t help but secretly adore the ferocity and defiance of his gorgeous step brother, even if it is likely to get them both killed any day now.
When their father finally snaps and chases them into the forest with an axe, Hansel and Gerhardt are forced to rely on each other in an incredibly dangerous place that’s bereft of food, inhabited by hungry wolves, and cursed by dark magic. As one adventure after another tests their bravery and their bond, Hansel and Gerhardt discover that maybe they don’t hate each other as much as they thought they did. In fact, maybe they even like each other. A lot. More than step brothers probably should… But who’s there in the forest to stop them exploring their explosive attraction?
And when they stumble upon the adorable little house made entirely of sweets… Well, what could possibly go wrong?
Hansel and Gerhardt is the spicy, action-packed, heart-wrenching, enemies to lovers, step-brothers MM Romance fairytale retelling of your most twisted and delightful imaginings. Light a candle, brew a hot cup of something tasty, and snuggle down beside the fire. It’s time for a queer spin on an old classic.
Each book set in the GriMM fairytale world can be read as a standalone and contains its own Happily Ever After story. But we do recommend reading each one, as the tales are connected to each other in multiple magical ways.
Angel's review:
Hansel and Gerhardt is the third book in the GriMM Tales series, and it's fantastic!
The Hansel and Gretel fairytale we're all familiar with isn't my favorite, this retelling has definitely won me over.
My heart was hurting reading about all of the terrible things these two men went through and experienced. They had a long road ahead of them before they were able to get their HEA, but it was worth it was the end. Hansel is the more levelheaded and world weary of the pair, rightfully so, after being shown the horrors of the world repeatedly it makes sense for him to have caution. Whereas Gerhardt rushes into certain situations without thinking them through.. like with the mushroom, and with the cottage made of sweets... But that's part of what made him so endearing, his enthusiasm and positive attitude helped balance out Hansel's more serious personality.
I think the pair works great together both as a team and also as a couple, it took them a while to be open about their feelings and to get to a point where they can be free... But once they got there it was so beautiful! I want to comments the author on all their descriptive descriptions of all the desserts that were begging to be eaten at the deceiving cottage. There were so many desserts and sugary sweets mentioned and each one was described with great detail. That also leads into the next thing I want to discuss... The world building. The Dark Forest is one full of mystery, magic, and danger lurking around every corner. This author did a great job with creating different horrors that these characters stumbled into as well as vividly describing exactly what it was these characters were seeing. I thought the writing was done very well.
Something I really loved was how characters from the first two books in this series made an appearance in this story. Red was mentioned, a certain Wolf that travels with Red was seen... (That poor rabbit), and Zel also made an appearance! I think it's amazing that those characters had a crossover of sorts, it was really fun seeing those characters pop up in Hansel and Gerhardt's story. Another fantastic book in this amazing fairytale series!
Lori C's review:
My first thought is read the caution advisory at the beginning of the book. It is darker than both Little Red Riding Hood and Zel and the darkest in the series. I love this series so far. I love the retelling of fairytales and the obviously grown up romance aspect of them. I also like the interconnectedness of the tales. That is and will always be a HUGE favorite or mine and the reason I love series reads. I think it is pretty awesome when multiple authors work in a shared world.
I read a lot, so I’m not 100%, but I do think W.H. Lockwood is a new author for me. I enjoyed how even though this was a really dark story, there was a really strong connection between Hansel and Gerhardt. At first, I wasn’t sure about the connection, it took me a moment to get used to Gerhardt’s personality. Hansel was immediately my favorite of the two. He was so protective and caring of Gerhardt even when Gerhardt was mean or rude. I think for me the Herr Candy chapters were the hardest emotionally to read. I felt like Hansel was going to give up and I was so frustrated with Gerhardt. This made the author’s ending so perfect to me and the epilogue 🔥.
