The Forbidden Summer (A Pathfinders Lake Romance) by Raquel Riley

An age gap daddy boy romance. The Forbidden Summer is part of the Pathfinders forbidden romance combined universe. Père (Waylon/Cap) is Van’s (Evander) grandfather, not by blood but by love. As time passes, they both start to feel a different kind of love for each other, a deeper connection that goes into forbidden territory.

From the blurb:

E(Van)der

Summers always meant a return to the peaceful lake cabin, a special place where Père and I had made countless cherished memories together. Waylon was my grandfather—-not by blood, but by love. We fished, swam, worked side-by-side, and for the longest time, that was enough to satisfy my growing feelings for him. Until one summer, it wasn’t.

I started noticing how his eyes lingered and how our closeness felt different. The tension between us was impossible to ignore, but neither dared to voice our feelings. Then we found the key to the shed. Buried beneath dust and time were the letters of two men—Harold and Elliot—who had once loved in secret, their story mirroring our own in ways we couldn’t dismiss.

As we unraveled their past, our own feelings became unavoidable. But was our love destined to stay hidden like theirs, or could we finally break the curse of Pathfinders Lake?

The Forbidden Summer is an MM romance between a young man and his step-grandad with a 34 year age gap, loads of mutual pining, and a forbidden summer adventure. Part of the Pathfinders Lake multi-author collaboration.

Molly Otto's review:

Waylon & Van show that if you allow time to develop true feelings, any relationship is possible. These two men show a maturity and understanding in their pining that makes their age gap seem not an issue. Sometimes, with this large of an age gap, I don’t understand how a relationship could be lasting, but with these two, you feel they were meant to have this shot at something real. Raquel did a fantastic job in showing their need to be together and that they would do anything to be together. My only complaint is that some questions still feel unsettled when completing, does this mean there will be more from them in the future, or are we left wondering? The epilogue was done in a perfect for them happily ever after showing they are left chasing the sun to live their best lives in the best way they know how. Together, one adventure at a time.

Lori C's review:

Van grew up with his grandparents. They were his safe haven. When his mom married and moved them away, he lost that comfort. Now a young adult in college, he’s got a hobby that helps him make money, stay active, and spend time out in the fresh air. When he heads back to the cabin for a summer visit, he and Père fall back into their old pea and pod relationship.

This book by Raquel Riley is a slow burn, will they, won’t they drama. It is pretty low angst overall and felt like an easy read. The characters are lovable and the story is paced to keep you turning the pages. I love Raquel’s story within a story about Elliot and Harold. Their love was as forbidden as Waylon and Van’s. The emotions that both characters felt came through the page leaving me laughing and happy at the end.
