The Emperor and his assassin consort are joining forces to bring down the empire from within. But can Airón trust his growing feelings for the man he is still supposed to kill? Or will they both die before they can accomplish their goals?
From the blurb:
In this den of vipers and vultures, can I trust the emperor I was sent to kill or is he using me to destroy all I love?
I abandoned my destiny in favor of a new goal: working with Emperor Tallu to take down the Southern Imperium. Only things are not so easy when we’re faced with the imperial generals who brought the continent to its knees.
If my mother knew what I was doing, her rage would melt the Silver City, but I have no choice as Tallu and I pursue a powerful weapon that could end any opposition to the Imperium.
Why does it matter if I’m finding myself all too attracted to a husband I can’t trust, whose secrets multiply the closer he lets me get?
SNik's review:
Second in series (Emperor’s Assassin), must be read in order. Fantasy. Established couple. Single POV. Mild cliffhanger. Heed content warnings.
Immediately starting where the first book left off, Airón and Tallu come to an agreement to help each other with the political machinations of the empire’s elite and military. Unsure of his place in Tallu’s plans, Airón continues to try and decipher the power brokers and best way to destabilize the empire, while still planning on possibly killing Tallu.
Intrigue is a mainstay in this story, and we only have Airón’s POV but Tallu becomes more communicative in this story. In the first book information gaps lead to build up, but this time there seemed a lot that was left up in the air. I enjoyed Airón and Tallu’s growing feelings for each other, Tallu being expressive at times gave glimpses into his inner thoughts, but he was still hard to decipher. Airón is a capable and likable character as he struggles with duty, emotions, and all the possible repercussions of his actions. I am still very invested to see how this series plays out.
