Dangerously Omega by J.B. McDonald

A new omegaverse story that was different than what I'm used to! The Omegaverse has been a world I’ve been staying in lately. I enjoy the idea of male omegas and possible mpreg. Dangerous Omega is the same and yet different.

From the Dangerously Omega blurb:

Everyone knows omegas can be dangerous during heat; that's why there are restrictions on what they can do. Not that those restrictions have stopped Zihan, who was already a talented martial artist when his first heat struck. He's spent the last decade a loner by necessity, an omega on black market suppressants pretending to be an alpha can't afford romance.

Jackson has a smile for everyone except himself. A former runaway, then heat house stud, and briefly a petty criminal, he's finally found his place at Protection & Retrieval Services, Inc. He'll never be wanted for a long-term relationship, but with friends who are practically family, he's come to terms with that. Then in strides Zihan, a new recruit with a mysterious air.

When Zihan's suppressants are cut and heat starts to overcome him, he thinks his secret is busted. What he doesn't expect is for Jacks to offer to help. While the shell Zihan grew around himself years ago has been cracked, his instinct is to repair it, and the wall Jacks built for self-protection is solid. Will these two men find a way to tear their defenses down, or forever walk away from the possibility of love?

Angel's review:

Jackson and Zihan's story was very interesting, I've never read anything like it before. The writing style was interesting, the world this story takes place in feels dystopian. While Alpha's, Beta's, and Omegas are mentioned, there is no paranormal aspect to this story, no shifters, and no mpreg.

I struggled reading Zihan's POV, not because it was poorly written but because of how accurate the author was to his character. His character is from China and is not fluent in English, there are some words and expressions he doesn't know or understand. And at times that made his perspective hard to read because his dialogue with others, (and even his internal dialogue) seemed really stilted at times. I also didn't love how he was so judgemental at times, there were certain instances where he would be all for a certain subject or opinion, and then he would get very rude and hostile about it at different times. His back and forth wasn't something I particularly enjoyed reading about but I get why it was important to the overall story.

Jacks is such a bright bubbly light, he cares deeply for others and is enamored by Zihan despite him being an Alpha and closed off. Overtime Jackson was able to work his way through Zihan's high walls and was able to truly get to know the man behind the cold Alpha exterior. He was a really great contrast to Zihan's character and I think they worked quite well together. I would've loved more scenes where these two are together outside of the bedroom though. I understand why most of their interactions are within a bedroom but still, I would've liked seeing them out and about together.

Ezhno, Ramses and Adiv are total sweethearts! I adored how each one of them immediately helped both Jackson and Zihan when they figured out what exactly was going on. They all pitched in to help them through that difficult time and it was really beautiful to see!

All in all a really unique story with great side characters, and a grumpy/sunshine trope!

Lori C's review:

In J.B. McDonald’s world, an omega is potentially dangerous, more of a wild creature that needs to be controlled. Zihan is from China, where the life of an omega is tightly controlled and being an omega is seen as shameful. Zihan has pretended to be an alpha his entire life. He has also lived a life of servitude to his coach. He wanted a different life and when contacted by Protection & Retrieval Services, Inc, he makes a huge change in his life. Only he wasn’t he expecting his pesky omega side to come to the forefront. How can he protect his secret and still be an alpha?

This book had a collective of characters that bring the story to life. I double checked the author’s website and this is a standalone book. I was sure for a hot minute that this would be a series. Regardless, the story is amazing! The difference in how the author planned this omega world versus others brings layers of emotions. It is different enough to make you think and yet similar enough to feel the story. I feel like Zihan is the yin to Jack’s yang. They balance each other out and connect in ways that feel natural. They aren’t the only characters that stand out either. Adiv, Ramses, and Ezhno rounded out their team and are fabulous in their own ways. Ramses, an omega, is super tech savvy and smart. Ezhno and Adiv are both warrior types like Jacks. Adiv also knows some of Jacks secrets and makes sure he is kind to himself. They work as a team and when Zahin needed their help, they all rallied around to help him and keep his secret. I feel like this book could lead to more. There are so many stories that could be told. I mean Abeba, what is their story? Why did Adiv leave Israel? This is such a good book! I will definitely read more by J.B. McDonald.
