Saved from an unmarked grave, Kirill is recruited to be a soldier for the mafia prince's family that rescued him. Yarik can't regret saving Kirill as they grow up together, but they must never betray their closeness, and survival each day is becomes harder when you have someone else to protect.
From the blurb:
Once upon a time, I saved a boy from certain death.
Fell for him so hard that I’d follow him straight to the gates of Hell, and say thank you for it.
But the problem with being hopelessly in love with Kirill Volkov is that he won't ever love me back.
On paper, we shouldn’t even be friends. He’s the grump to my sunshine and he hates to be touched while I’m touch-starved. Most of all, I'm the prince to a mafia kingdom and he's one of my father's soldiers.
And everyone knows that the Russian Bratva is a graveyard where all good things go to die.
Day by day, the Kirill I love is slipping further and further away. Now, when I look in his midnight-black eyes, only a stone-cold killer stares back.
That’s okay, though. There isn't anything I won't do to make him mine...
Even if it means that I'll need to kiss a villain.

SNik's review:
First in duet (No Mercy). Very slow burn/no burn. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.
When mafia heir Yarik rescues a young boy late one night little did he realize how tied together their lives would become. Through more than ten years Yarik and Kirill become friends but have to constantly avoid any closeness as they both are put through some horrible things in order to survive.
This story was mainly focused on the importance of their relationship as they grow through the years, and from Yarik’s POV a lot of yearning and pining for the friend that he realizes he wishes was more. There are plenty of quiet moments between Kirill and Yarik, but also ones of betrayal, guilt and violence. The writing of Kirill and yarik’s hidden emotions was heartbreaking and well done. Not so much a romance, as this book leads into the second with that possibility, as the two main characters are hoping that being alive and unhappy is better than happy and dead.
