Atop the Bell Tower (Spire Series Book 1) by Lewis Roberts

This is the most unique and intriguing book I've read this year so far!

From the blurb:

What if the person you loved most was the key to unlocking a power you never wanted?

Ethan Hernandez thought his sophomore year at Summit State University would be filled with late-night study sessions and cozy mornings with his boyfriend, Jason Havelock. But after a chilling Halloween carnival incident, Ethan’s world is turned upside down. Haunted by relentless migraines, cryptic dreams, and a growing flood of voices in his mind, Ethan discovers he has a power he never asked for—and can barely control.

Jason, desperate to help, turns to Dr. Robert Bellamy, a brilliant but mysterious psychology professor with a dark past whispered about on campus. As Ethan’s abilities intensify and the danger around them grows, the couple’s bond is tested like never before. With secrets lurking in every corner and betrayal threatening to tear them apart, Ethan and Jason must decide if love is enough to overcome the cost of power—or if it will destroy them both.

Meanwhile, campus reporter Asako Kato investigates the strange disappearance of a graduate student, uncovering unsettling links to Dr. Bellamy. As her search for answers deepens, she is drawn into a dangerous web that entangles her fate with Ethan and Jason’s.

Described as “If Heartstopper went to college and met Stranger Things,” Atop the Bell Tower is a gripping m/m supernatural thriller that blends romance, mystery, and a chilling exploration of how far we’ll go to protect the ones we love. Perfect for fans of heartfelt relationships, dark secrets, and edge-of-your-seat suspense.

Angel's review:

When I first started this book I was unsure how Lewis was going to juggle everything the blurb promised. It seemed like there would be too much going on within the story, so I was a bit skeptical on how this story would turn out. Let me tell you, this is one of the best books I've read so far this year. The writing is exemplary! There are so many intricate details describing the variety of different backgrounds, as well as having a fantastic mysterious buildup surrounding Ethan, Jason, and Bellamy. There is a lot going on concurrently through the story but it is done in a very smooth and clear way.

I liked that we got multiple perspectives from several of the most critical characters. We weren't just seeing these events play out in Jason and Ethan's POV, but instead we saw different events through the eyes of a variety of characters. This was done immaculately well, I'm just absolutely blown away by this level of writing.

The plotline is very interesting and kept me hooked the whole time, I was constantly wondering what was going on amd what was going to happen next. I suspected Bellamy was guilty of something but I didn't predict how evil he truly was. "All in the name of science" As he so claims. I liked all the twists and turns that occured in this story, each and everyone was truly fantastic and added to the story.

The pacing was slow but in a deliberate way, I liked that the pace was slower. It made the events that were occuring feel natural instead of rushed. This isn't your typical romance story, it is SO much more than that. I will say that this does leave off with a lot of unanswered questions and a massive cliffhanger. I am beyond curious as to what's going to be revealed in the second story. Hopefully it'll release soon!
