Chasms Between Us by Kussy Gonzalez

Riding a wave this year in discovering new books and authors. Many of you will probably hate me for this recommendation. But there is a small percentage of readers who, like me, are drawn to the grittier and darker stories, that can really rattle your mind, feelings and perception of life priorities.

From the Chasms Between Us blurb:

Two best friends dare to cross the boundaries of friendship and plunge headfirst into the tempestuous waters of love. Spanning over 15 years, these star-crossed lovers’ lives diverge and intersect, perpetually finding themselves out of sync with destiny's plans.

Hunter, battling inner demons and societal expectations, starts a journey of self-discovery as he grapples with his evolving sexuality. His struggle to come to terms with his desires and identity leads him down a path filled with introspection, acceptance, and the pursuit of authentic love.

Logan, once the epitome of problematic recklessness, finds himself at a crossroads. Faced with new responsibilities, the weight of adulthood pulls him away from the uninhibited adventures of their youth, setting him on a course that may either sever or redefine his connection with Hunter.

Gritty and raw, this novel doesn't shy away from exploring the complex themes of homosexuality, bisexuality, and polyamory, offering a candid and realistic portrayal of the intricacies of love and relationships in the modern world.

GaleM's Review:

This story covers an impressive time frame of 15 years and starts from the college days of 2 best friends. The first mystery I wasn’t able to solve was why they were best friends in first place. The second one was how two people can think that they love each other, but everything they do is to cause each other pain. The book has a ton of TW's and deals with a lot of heavy topics - mental health issues, addiction, self destructive behaviour, internalised homophobia, co dependency and Cheating/Infidelity! Yes, there is a lot of this, dreadful for many, trigger! Unbelievably, but undeniably, that Cheating is actually part of the personal growth of both main characters and shows the issues they have with other partners and the inability to build lasting relationships through the years. Hunter and Logan relationship is epitome of toxicity in the most vicious and destructive way that leaves a lot of pain and hurt behind. And it burns everything meaningful and beautiful around them. It has a HEA at the end, but I was so exhausted after everything I read, I couldn’t believe that it was possible.

So if you need an emotional earthquake, you're welcome to try this one!
