Wonderful and unique storyline will keep you reading and the love between these two will warm your heart. Lachlan, a lonely hearth and kitchen witch, often overlooked but always loved by his family, finds his familiar in a skittish black cat. Kit, a cat shifter who's forgotten who he really is, finally finds safety after fighting to survive in the cold for so long. Together, they find companionship, comfort, and understanding. But their bond might not be strong enough to survive Lachlan's sudden discovery of who, and what, Kit really is.
From the Me and My Christmas Familiar blurb:
What happens when a witch’s familiar turns out to be more than just an innocent kitty?
When Lachlan, a shy hearth witch, adopts a stray cat from the streets, the cat becomes his cherished companion and familiar. Lachlan couldn’t be happier—until one snowy night when everything changes.
Kit loves his witch. After all, Lachlan saved him, keeps him fed and warm, and gives him the best pats. The thing is Kit isn’t just a cat. He’s a shifter who’s just forgotten how to shift. But then one night, desperate to express his feelings to Lachlan, Kit returns to his human form. Unfortunately, Lachlan doesn’t react how Kit expects. Now Lachlan avoids Kit. He won’t pat, cuddle, or tell Kit he loves him. Kit should have just stayed a cat! Everything was wonderful then.
How can Kit show Lachlan he is the same, regardless of his form? Can he win back Lachlan’s affection? Or will Kit be a familiar without his witch this Christmas?
SNik's review:
Part of a series (An MM Christmas Fantasy), but can be read as a standalone. Novella. Paranormal. Found family. Dual POV.
Lachlan is a powerful hearth witch in his own right, but having a familiar would boost his power and cure his loneliness. Coaxing the stray cat in the alley to be his pet is the best thing ever, Kit is Lachlan’s constant companion, but when Lachlan (and Kit) are surprised by Kit being able to shift to a human form their connection is strained.
This author knows how to write quick stories with tons of emotion and always brings the heartbreaking scenes, and I am here for it. Kit is devoted to his witch, and Lachlan has to slowly find his way back to loving Kit in any form. Some fun cat antics, supportive secondary characters that are a solid family with no drama, and a love that starts out differently than it ends up but in all the sweetest ways.
LCDolphin's review:
Wonderful story of Lachlan, a hearth witch who works in his family's bakery and Kit, a stray cat Lachlan takes in. Kit is not just a cat though, but a shifter who has forgotten how to shift. Loved these characters and how they were together. The unique storyline will keep you reading and the love between these two will warm your heart.
GreenWingReads review:
This was my first story by this author and overall, I enjoyed it.
Kit and Lachlan's story is a fairly short, easy read that I finished in a single afternoon. The writing style is enjoyable and the story moved along at a good pace. There are some great steamy scenes and plenty of emotional angst between the MCs.
The story is of Kit, a cat shifter who doesn't remember he's also a human, and Lachlan, a lonely hearth and kitchen witch who helps to run the family bakery. He's one of the youngest three of his many (9, I think?) siblings and often feels overlooked, though always loved by his vivacious family.
I found the premise that all but one of the siblings lives in the same apartment style home above the bakery to be surprising, and I imagine it's a bit stifling. There was a lot of effort put into introducing all the siblings and their love interests in this short story, and I did feel like the main plot between Lachlan and Kit suffered for it. The bulk of the story occurs over only a couple of days, once Lachlan learns that Kit isn't just a cat and he has to try to come to terms with the truth about his familiar.
Kit was very sweet and understandably scared and weary as a cat. His past and how he came to be trapped in his cat form is truly heartbreaking, though very quickly mentioned then brushed aside. I found that a bit frustrating. I would have liked to learn more about Kit and who he is as a human beyond his devotion to and love of Lachlan, which was the primary focus. The story focused a lot more on Lachlan's character development than Kit's.
The romance is sweet and the emotions are very strong, though the dialogue felt over the top, especially in the steamy scenes, and it got a bit repetitive at times. Lachlan and Kit both read as very young and naive, especially in their manner of speaking.
I believe this story would have been more enjoyable had it been longer and more fully explored. It's rather superficial, which makes it enjoyable for a quick afternoon read. I would be interested in reading more if it were expanded, but I don't think that would be possible as the issues between the MCs arise and are overcome very quickly.
This is part of a series and I believe each of Lachlan's siblings will have their own stories, however I also feel like I already know how those will work out because so much of this story introduced the siblings and their love interests already. I enjoyed reading this story and discovering this author, but I'm on the fence about whether or not I'll continue with the series. The world building was pretty minimal and almost the entire story happens within Lachlan's home and family's bakery.
This story was adorable! I thought the chapters that were in that Cat's perspective in the beginning were really neat and creative! I enjoyed those chapters a lot, I thought they added a nice way to get to know Kit as a cat.
Lachlan's character was also cute too, he is so passionate about his job and loves what he does. He enjoys helping people through his food, and adores his family. When he meets Kit he feels whole again and not as lonely as he once was.
Lachlan and Kit together are so cute! I loved how at ease they were around each other and how both of them leaned on one another. Once Kit shifted into his human form things were rocky for a bit but they were able to figure things out and learn what works best for them both.
I thought this story was good! It flowed nicely and Lachlan and Kit's relationship develop slowly which I enjoyed. I wouldn't call this a super Christmassy story, but there are some mentioned of Christmas elements which helped give the story a cosy feeling. Overall a good story! I'm looking forward to reading about the other Hearth siblings.
