The Whims of Gods (Monstrous Whims Book 1) by Mell R. Bright

This is a new author with incredible talent to combine together urban fantasy and dystopian elements in fictional worlds that are captivating, twisted and so unpredictable, it makes the imagination explode.

From The Whims of Gods blurb:

A Howl’s Moving Castle-inspired Science Fantasy M/M Monster Romance set in a post-apocalyptic world with giant monsters.

Helios has a knack for survival. All he has ever known is the world after the Rise. He’s the product of a ruthless new era. Humanity has been brought down by the old gods who walk the Earth once again. But on the day he’s about to be sold into slavery after being captured with a group of nomads, survival comes in the form of a mutant. His savior, Griffin, agrees to take him on board his vessel, the Beetle. The Beetle is a never-before-seen six-legged machine inhabited by a bad-tempered AI.

Helios, seduced by the prospect of doing more than just surviving, will do everything in his power to hold on to this new life. And if staying on the Beetle means spending time with the Devil of the Wastes, so be it.

The Whims of Gods is the first book in Mell R. Bright's Monstrous Whims series. It's a gay fantasy romance with smut (18+).

Trigger warning: Non-human genitalia, sexual abuse (not explicit), violence, blood, and strong language.

GaleM's review:

What happens when humans don't learn from previous mistakes in their history and turn Earth in wasteland? What happens when mythology is more real than fiction? What happens when old Gods awaken and meet curious human minds and human tech? The author has created such a captivating, multilayered fictional world where human survivors, demigods and lab created monsters learn to live together. And of course this leads to the logical question : What is the bigger menace - the humans, stripped of their humanity, under the duress and pressure of the challenge to survive or the so called monsters, created in all kinds of different ways and mixed DNAs? Because sometimes Gods and monsters show more humanity and care even though they are supposed to have none. You definitely don't want to miss such an intriguing concept! The fictional world, the author describes isn’t only black or white. There are a myriad shades of grey in it and it was so thrilling to see the world through such an interesting point of view.

Helios is a human survivor and Griffin, the mutant, who everyone knows as the Devil of the Waste lands, are unlikely couple, but at the end it worked out so unexpectedly well. Griffin showed more compassion and care than the humans, who wanted to sell Helios into slavery. It's an excellent example that not everything in life is in the shades of black and white. The banter, the emotional interactions, that made me fall in love with these characters, the heart-stopping adventures in the Waste lands were a never ending spiral from the beginning to the end of the story. Thankfully this is only the first installment and we will get to see more of this amazing world.
