1. Indie or Traditionally published? - Tell us how this works for you...
I wrote my first MM romance in 2019, with no background in the writing/publishing world, and sent it off to an indie LGBTQ publisher, NineStar Press. They accepted it, and my next three books too! Working with my editor at NineStar has been invaluable experience – she has taught me so much. However, I am self-pubbing two books in the first half of next year as I’d like to be able to widen my audience to KU.
2. Tell us about your first… published gay fiction/romance
My first published gay romance is Last of the Moussakas, a stand-alone, which features two friends-to-lovers who were childhood friends on the beautiful Greek island of Aegina (where the story takes place). The modern story between Georgios, a Greek chef and his playboy lover, Max, is interwoven between a devastating wartime history which haunts both families.
and then your most recent one..
My most recent is To Take A Quiet Breath, book 3 in my popular Rossingley series and is out this month. It features two men in their thirties and is based in France, but with trips to Rossingley! One character is a French civil servant and the other an ex-con. Very much an opposites-attract, and one of the characters has a serious health problem, which they overcome together.
3. Do you write full time or part-time?
I write part time; my day job is as an anesthesiologist.
4. Which character still pops into your mind to visit from time to time?
My most popular character is Dr Lucien Avery, the 16th earl of Rossingley. He has many homes and one of them is in my head. He features in all the Rossingley books (he owns the estate) and maybe next year he’ll get another one…..
5. What are your writing goals for the next year? The future?
Nxt year I am publishing a lighthearted duology set in the surfing world! It features a gorgeous red-haired Norwegian surfer who takes his Viking ancestry very seriously! And after those books, I have another book – a complete contrast, which features the struggles of a young gay man growing up in the industrial Midlands in the 1990’s. And after that….I’m working on another duology set in London, and then of course, Lucien nags at my brain….
6. What’s the hardest part about writing M/M romance or erotica?
People I know, asking, “why don’t you write M/F?!”
7. Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration from daily life – working in the public sector means I come into contact with just about every facet of society. I am quiet and observant! The British class system fascinates me, having experienced life in all tiers of it, and I think this is echoed in the characters and stories I write.
8. What do you do if you hit a wall while writing? How do you combat writer’s block?
I live on the edge of the country estate where I set my Rossingley novels and spend a lot of time walking my gorgeous cocker spaniel, Jarvis, in the British countryside. I find inspiration comes to me during these quiet walks. I also favour the ‘miss it out and come back to it’ approach when I struggle to write a section, and then I find the solution becomes obvious.
