Extra Innings (Perfect Catch) by A.E. Madsen

Two best friends. One drunken night. Will their friendship grow into more? A friends to lovers romance story that has a beautiful depiction of accepting each other no matter what.

From the Extra Innings blurb:

Jude

Tae is my best friend. We've always been close. I just never realized how close until we woke up in bed together. I've never thought about him that way, but now I can't get the idea out of my head. Only thing is I'm not into guys ... right?

Tae

I'm not looking for anything serious. I'm perfectly fine hanging out with my friends. But after one drunken night with Jude, things are awkward. I'm not sure where we stand, and I don't know if I want to go back to the way things were before.

That night changed everything.

Extra Innings is an MM friends to lovers demisexual-awakening romance. This story is part of the Perfect Catch series, but it can standalone.

SNik's review:

Standalone novella within series (Perfect Catch). Best friends to lovers. Demisexual representation. Dual POV.

A drunken night hook up between best friends is nothing to be awkward about right? But once Jude has some time to think about his feelings for Tae he realizes that he wants Tae as more than a friend.

This is a quick and sweet story with plenty of spice as Jude almost fearlessly acknowledges his attraction to Tae and overcomes his hesitation to express his feelings. I appreciated that there was no drama and that they easily moved into an intimate relationship, given that it’s a short story that was fine with me. A cute read with a baseball player and his slightly introverted friend that move their friendship to love seamlessly.

Lori C's review:

Extra Innings is the prequel to the Perfect Catch series. I really enjoyed the Blue Mountain University series, so have been looking forward to A’s next book. Extra Innings is similar to BMU in that it is based around sports and the guys who play them. Perfect Catch is a baseball series. As a non-sporty person, I love that the sports speak in A’s writing isn’t so intense that I am lost and confused.

To be honest, the one person confused in this book is Jude. His character is a mixture of laidback and unsure. When he and Tae get too drunk at a dorm party, Jude initiates a kiss that leaves him with a lot of big feelings. I really felt like I was watching Jude figure himself out through this prequel.

As a reader, I really get into stories that I feel involved in somehow. I need that emotional pull to the story or that character that feels like someone I could meet in real life. I liked Jude and Tae for those reasons. Tae seemed really sweet. I’m already looking forward to Austin and Cooper’s story. One thing I’m curious about is where the college is located. Will we see any of our BMU friends or is this a whole new area? Either way, I am ready to start a new adventure with A. E. Madsen.

Heather's review:

I'm not sure why this was my first A.E. Madsen book, but after reading this sweet and steamy best friends to lovers story it won't be my last.   I like how Jude dives into his new normal and how cautious, but optimistic Tae is... This is such a well balanced novella, with steam, relationship and a little bit of tell the parents angst.

I look forward to seeing more from the Perfect Catch world.
