Courting the Dragon Lord (A Royal Arrangement) by Gigi Rivers

Dragons, mages, magic, oh my! Oh, and a semi arranged marriage!

From the Courting the Dragon Lord blurb:

To end the war, he must marry the enemy.

Prince Ash Rosewood is terrified of the dragons. To him, they mean nothing but dragonfire, forests of ashen remains, and blackened corpses. But after twenty years of war, the only path to peace requires Ash to marry one of them.

At the peace assembly, Ash tries to avoid the dragons—until one collides with him and he finds himself in the arms of Lord Barrett Morton. As he gazes into the dragon lord’s striking green eyes, he can’t help but notice the kindness dwelling within. Ash begins to wonder if marrying a dragon might not be as terrible as he once thought.

Lord Barrett Morton, the low-born bastard son of the king of Draconia, yearns for recognition. And despite his accomplishments during the war, many still look down upon him. When the queen of Botanial offers her son’s hand to the winner of a contest, Barrett sees a chance to not only cement the peace but prove his worth. And after meeting the beautiful nature mage Prince Ash, he’s more than ready to fight for the right to claim him.

But there are forces that seek to unravel the fragile peace and destroy their union. Can Ash and Barrett find love amidst the turmoil? Or will the same powers that fuelled the war tear them apart?

Angel's review:

Barrett and Ash may be from two different sides of the war that has decimated their people, but they just fit together. Ash gets treated poorly by his brother and aunt, and his mother makes it seem as if he doesn't exist. Until her scheme doesn't work, and then he becomes a prize to be won... Luckily for him, Barrett wanted to win him, was determined to do just that.

I liked this book, it's definitely within Gigi's PNR realm that she's so good at writing, but it has a little twist which I liked. The aspect of Mages and Dragons being at war but trying to establish peace was interesting, and I liked the glimpses of the history that lead to the union between Ash and Barrett. I also found Ash's magic to be very creative, him being able to grow beautiful looking flowers but for them to be anything but that was interesting!

Overall a great story!

SNik's review:

Prequel start to a new series (A Royal Arrangement). Paranormal. Arranged marriage. Slow burn. Dual POV. Quick read.

After years of war the dragon kingdom of Draconia has agreed to a treaty and the surrounding kingdoms will each have a royal marry a dragon noble. Prince Ash is a nature mage and doesn’t expect the interest from dragon Lord Barrett, nor his competing to marry, but they are to be wed for the treaty.

Misunderstandings between them cause them each to hide their yearning for the other, but eventually the truth comes out as they vow to be together no matter the opposition. I enjoy the instalove and insta-crush way attraction and hopeful happiness occurs between these characters. Ash and Barrett are sweet together and I look forward to more from this new series.

This is the prequel story to the Royal Arrangement series, which will feature a different couple in arranged marriages as part of a treaty to stop a war. The Queen of Botanial has two sons, with the elder being her favourite and the one she'd intended to marry to one of the dragons. Enter Lord Barret, who after a meet cute with Prince Ash, decides he wants to win the challenge and choose his intended. There's something of a misunderstanding on both sides, with Ash thinking Barrett also wants his elder brother, and Barrett thinking Ash wants to be with his brother instead.

This was fun, actually and I really enjoyed it, although I did wish they'd have learned to just talk to each other to avoid all the misunderstanding. It was a nice progression of their relationship as you see them get to know each other and fall in love. This serves as a nice introduction to the world and characters, and bodes well for the series ahead. I'm more than keen to see where this series goes and will definitely pick up others in the series.
