Rayan has escaped his criminal past with Mathias's help, and now they try to maintain a secret but separate life. But Mathias is under investigation by a determined law enforcement officer and has to decide how to prioritize the life he's always wanted with the important man in his life he refuses to give up.
Here it was again: the impossible situation. Their lives were fundamentally incompatible but inherently intertwined. He didn’t know how to unravel what they had without unraveling himself.
The Feds have taken a renewed interest in the spate of criminal activity in Quebec, and Mathias Beauvais, a consigliere in the Montreal mafia, discovers it’s not just him they’re after. Can he deal to this challenge like the ones before, or is it possible he’s no longer the man he once thought he was?
Despite his desire for a new life, Rayan Nadeau’s past has caught up to him, and he’s thrown back into the very world he tried to escape. With Mathias willing to put Rayan’s freedom before his own, he may have to abandon all hope of them remaining together.
Inspector Frances Allen is a seasoned federal officer with a reputation to uphold. When she’s called in to head the investigation into Mathias, she quickly discovers that she’s met her match in the imposing mafioso. As their game of cat and mouse turns deadly, Frances is forced to question not only her commitment to the job but her own sense of justice.
SNik's review:
Second in trilogy (Montreal Series), must be read in order. Established relationship. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.
Continuing 2 years after the end of the first book, Mathias remains at the top of the Canadian mafia hierarchy while maintaining his secret long distance relationship with now full-time student Rayan. The problem is law enforcement is breathing down his neck and his focus has slowly become strained as he tries to keep his personal life separate from his criminal life.
Mathias and Rayan spend a fair amount of this book apart, however the storyline was interesting enough to keep me invested even when they weren’t on page together. And when they were together it is clear that there is a continued building of a committed, loyal, steamy, and unbreakable relationship between Rayan and Mathias. They both will do anything to protect the other, and I enjoyed their intelligence and fearlessness when it came to their working to survive together no matter what. This story ends with an HFN as the series is intended to continue with the same couple.
Reed Kaye's review:
This series must be read in order since this picks up after A Life Chosen.
Rayan living daily without Mathias is hard. He is involved with school but his thoughts are always waiting for Mathias. That is until things in Mathias’s life get so intense that Rayan is forced to step out of his new life.
Mathias’s life has become more demanding and his time with Rayan is keeping his mind a little scattered. When things start to threaten him, he starts reacting in a hurried way that causes him to make mistakes. All of a sudden he finds Rayan back.
There are many twists to this part of the story. I really am enjoying this series and can’t wait for the next.
