Returning home and wanting to settle in brings a new set of chores for Lord Alfie as he is tasked with hiring more local people to bring good will to the surrounding village. All of a sudden death and murder are once more stalking Alfie and Nick as they try desperately to hold onto their secret and special relationship.
From the His Lordship’s Folly blurb:
Alfie and Dominick can’t wait to return to Balcarres House. After the year they’ve had, a little peace and quiet in the Scottish countryside is just what they need.
They’re completely unprepared for the chaos that awaits them or the sinister threats that soon turn violent. With more eyes on them than ever before, Alfie struggles with the weight of an earldom and Dominick can’t risk being seen helping him without putting both of their lives in danger. Even an attempt to enjoy some of their wealth turns sour when their decision to build a folly overlooking the manor leads to a vicious murder.
Or does it?
When the corpse disappears into thin air, the whispers about the strange new earl only grow louder and the need for discretion becomes even more vital if Dominick is going to stay by his lover’s side. As the autumn nights get darker, so do the events unfolding around them. Soon it becomes clear that someone wants them gone… one way or another.
His Lordship’s Folly is the fifth novel in the His Lordship’s Mysteries series.
SNik's review:
Fifth in series (His Lordship’s Mysteries), best if read in order. Historical mystery. Established couple. Found family. Dual POV.

This series is an absolute favorite of mine, this author and these characters never disappoint. Finally back home at Balcarres House, Alfie and Nick are hoping to settle in, but being an Earl requires a lot of work, caring for the lands and the people and Alfie is trying to keep up. Employing more people and hiring an architect for improving the gardens and building a folly for him and Nick to enjoy unfortunately brings an unforeseen danger, and Alfie and Nick must again protect themselves and those in their care.
This story held a good amount of emotional as well as steamy physical connection between Alfie and Nick, expanding their love story which I really appreciated as it held equal weight with the mystery in the book. Being back on familiar ground with the great cast of secondary characters that have become a found family was so enjoyable, the mystery kept me entertained while as always I swooned at the amount of dedication and love Alfie and Nick share. A great addition to this series.
