Roots Run Deep (Once and Always Book 2) by Melody Claire

Two lonely men find comfort with each other, but when the friendship that they've been comforted by morphs into something more will they be able to open up about their feelings?

From the Roots Run Deep blurb:

Zach

As the former Homecoming King and Captain of the Soccer Team, I’ve worked hard at being the guy everyone expects me to be. But when I develop an unexpected friendship with Jason the summer before college, I find myself opening up to him in ways I never have with anyone else. As our relationship deepens and blooms into something more, he becomes the person I cling to when tragedy strikes…until I walk away.

Jason

It’s been nine years since the only person I’ve ever been attracted to walked out of my life. Now, Zach’s back in my small town, wanting to make amends. And even as I resolve to keep my distance, I find myself unable to resist his pull.

As that old spark of attraction flares, I’m determined to focus on our future, while Zach struggles to leave our history in the past.

I’ve forgiven him, but I’m not sure he can forgive himself.

Roots Run Deep is Book Two in the Once and Always series featuring men finding love and their second chances. This emotional romance features themes of grief and anxiety. For a full list of triggers, visit my website.

SNik's review:

Second in series (Once & Always), but can be read as a standalone. Second chance. Demisexual representation. Mental health representation. Hurt/comfort. Found family. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.

The summer after high school graduation, Jason and Zach build an unexpected friendship that runs deep for both of them, their time spent together something they both value. As time passes that year they become closer, and over the holidays both men realize they are open to a romantic relationship, but after a family emergency affects both of them, Zach ghosts Jason and they both suffer and are left hurt.

I enjoyed reading about the relationship growing between Jason and Zach, their moments of support, acceptance, and caring were really sweet. Jason does not easily forgive Zach which is realistic, but that side of the story went much quicker than the first. This story was emotional and has some great supportive secondary characters, and Jason and Zach seemed like they were always meant to be so it was a welcome HEA.

Angel's review:

I found this story to be a nice, good book. The writing I thought was good, the characters themselves were detailed and each had their own individual background and personalities. The flow of the story was decent, but at times it felt as though the story dragged on. There were times where the scenes between Jason and Zach just felt repetitive and redundant.. I felt like their relationship in the beginning developed gradually overtime which I liked. But then after their falling out Jason didn't want to hear Zach's apologies, (rightfully so..), then a couple chapters later they are rekindling their relationship from years prior. It just felt a bit unbalanced to me.

Other than that I enjoyed it. I found the relationship development in the beginning was written really well. I loved how Zach and Jason built a strong friendship first, then overtime realized that they may like one another as more than just friends. While it did feel slow at times, I think it was exactly what was needed in the beginning. It gave both characters time to get to know one another, connect, and grow. I adored Mandy and Drea, they were fabulous throughout the whole story. The love they have for their older brothers was so endearing, and seeing Jason become so close to Drea was so sweet.

All in all a great read! Here are some tropes you'll find: Friends to lovers,
Summer romance,
Hurt/Comfort,
Mental health representation, and many more!
