Callback (Evergreen University Book 2) by RS McKenzie & Lee McCormick

Just as Luca is questioning his interest in sex he meets the theater professor that makes him want to experience all kinds of new things. Luca is exactly what Maddox would wish for in a partner, but refusing to give him his heart becomes harder and harder to deny.

From the blurb:

Luca

My life has always boiled down to two words: be good.

Be good because your grandparents didn’t have to take you in when your dad abandoned you. Be good so you can get a scholarship for college. Be good… and don’t tell anyone what happened freshman year.

But when Maddox Levine tells me I’m good, all the stress, all the worry… it fades away. Being good for him makes me feel like I’m floating… but wanting to be good for my professor…

That might be the thing that makes me fall.

Maddox

I’ve spent twenty years ignoring my past, never allowing my frozen heart to thaw for anyone. I’ve kept most people at arm’s length, my attitude ensuring no one gets too close.

Then I meet Luca and he cracks something inside me that’s been locked up for decades. He’s soft… innocent… sweet. More than I deserve. But that doesn’t stop me from wanting.

Or showing him a whole new world.

Callback is a dark themed MM Romance between a closed-off professor and his shy TA trying to navigate their forbidden relationship. Expect high heat, a possessive older man, and two people discovering that the only thing they really need is each other.

SNik's review:

Second in series (Evergreen University), but can be read as a standalone. Professor/TA. Age gap. Light BDSM. Dual POV.

Luca is a naive and innocent college student intrigued by his roommates recent escapades and unusually attracted to the theater professor he has been tasked with assisting. Luca ticks all of Maddox’s boxes, looks, behavior and needs, but he doesn’t want to take advantage and he certainly doesn’t want to get feelings.

This story has a mutual attraction, a professor that wants to guide, and a young man willing to explore all of his new desires. I did enjoy the dynamic between Luca and Maddox, the build up and the eventual steam was entertaining. There was one event late in the book that seemed to come out of nowhere so it took a minute for me to get back into the flow of the story, but Maddox certainly proves his protectiveness of Luca. Overall, I enjoyed this book, and am certainly intrigued about the next couple at Evergreen University.

Angel's review:

I've been hearing so many good things about this book and was so excited to read it myself. The excitement and good reviews were well warranted!! These two authors are so talented on their own but when they put their writing talents together they create something that's absolutely dynamite!!

I absolutely adored Luca, he's a total sweetheart and I can relate to him in a lot of various way. I liked how his character was represented and how the authors had his and Maddox's relationship develop slowly over time, and how it was a slow progression. I think that suited Luca's character in the best way as a faster paced relationship wouldn't have felt right given Luca's personality/experience.

I thought Maddox was sweet as well in his own way, he's perceived as a major grump but those he cares about he cares for deeply. He may be a grump towards others but not to everyone. I appreciated how seriously he took communication and consent and how he always checked in with Luca before they did anything, during, and after. I thought that was really sweet and a good way to show how seriously he was taking Luca's comfort.

One of my favorite parts of this story was seeing Luca's relationship with his grandmother, they had such a cute relationship!! I love that she sent Luca care packages full of homemade meals and was there for him no matter what, it was really endearing to read about.

Also.. the part where Luca's grandmother calls him out on his stage fright was hilarious! Made me laugh for sure!

I would've loved if there were fewer spicy scenes but that's a personal preference as I don't love super spice heavy books.

However, having said that, I still thought this book all in all was a good story!
