Rule Breaker (Bar Down Book 1) by Ava Olsen

Rule Breaker kicks off the main series after THE GAME CHANGER prequel novella had us needing to know more from the Cougars. Maddox and Kayden prove that love and care and a little understanding go a long way to finding where you were meant to belong.

From the blurb:

Maddox Rocher: Hockey is the only thing I care about. College? Hell no. And the last thing I need is Kayden, a golden retriever teammate who thinks I’m gonna drop my surly attitude and become his BFF. I know from painful experience to never to let my guard down and the only rule I follow is my own. But unlike everyone else, Kayden doesn’t sprint away from me. Instead, he’s skating too close. And we’re set to collide.

Kayden Melnyk: I love college. My hockey team, the parties, the people. Classes, not so much. Especially when I get paired with Maddox, a goalie who offers nothing but snarky comments and snide looks. He’s brilliant and beautiful, and I’m the jock on an athletic scholarship. He hates me but so what? We’re stuck together at away games. His anger sparks a reckless want I’ve never felt before. And I always follow the rules. So why does Maddox make me want to break every one?

Rule Breaker is a double queer awakening, grumpy/sunshine, hurt/comfort, college hockey MM romance.

Molly Otto's review:

Great start to an all new college hockey romance series from Ava Olsen. Maddox has set many barriers from a broken past to protect himself. What he was expecting was Kayden, a beautiful ray of sunshine that will do anything to slowly break down those barriers to get to know the real Maddox. These two may take a minute to open up, but when they do, it's beautiful and supportive. They show each other how to be free and happy. Maddox is one of those characters when he falls he falls fast and hard and will do anything for his partner. Kayden just puts it all on the table to show he can be the one to catch him even when they stumble along the way. It comes with a great cast of friends that I hope will also get future books.

Rogue's Review:

- frenemies to lovers
- double awakening
- grumpy/sunshine
-double virgin MCs

This is the start to a new series, set in Sutton University around the hockey team. This is Maddox (Mad) and Kayden (Kay)'s story and I really enjoyed it. Grumpy/sunshine is my absolute kryptonite and this was a good one. Mad is best described as surly, downright grumpy and very much a loner. Kay is the exact opposite, friendly to everyone and it was a joy to see him wearing down Mad as the story went on. These two just work together so well and it was lovely to see them realising their feelings for each other and finding their HEA. I could have done without the constant pushing away of Kay by Mad though, but that was his character and it all worked out in the end.

Honestly, I can take or leave hockey stories but I really enjoyed this one. There's so much scope for stories with the team and if Mad and Kay are anything to go by, this will be a great series and I really am looking forward to more.

Heather's Review:

I'm a sucker for fictional hockey bubble butts... and Kayden's is written to be delicious and perfect for his sunshine attitude... oh and grumpy Maddox the goalie is hot, tattooed and running from his demons.. the perfect combination for the first book n the Bar Down series!   Like Ava Olsen's previous books, you get great character development, a well paced story and lots of background details to whet your interest for the rest of the series!

Whether you like new adult/college romance, sports romance or just a good double queer awakening story, you'll want to add Rule Breaker to your TBA!
