In the Nick of Time (Subparheroes) by Elle Keaton

Part of the Subpar Heroes multi-author universe. In the Nick of Time is a grumpy sunshine age gap forced proximity romance.

From the blurb:

Have you always thought you were special?

Perennially unemployed loner Nick Sedgewick applies to an online job opening with that exact phrase and expects nothing to come of it. It was likely a no-so-funny prank after all.

If Doug 'Long Shot' Swanson wanted a new work partner he'd hire one himself. He's perfectly happy on his own and if he plays his cards right he'll retire sooner rather than later. And he certainly wouldn't hire an irritating spicy-candy-eating slacker who'd probably miss his own funeral.

But somebody is killing off agents and Nick's new boss needs Doug and Nick to figure out who it is and put a stop to it. And if they accidentally fall in love along the way that is no one's business but their own.

Neither man wants to be a hero. But maybe between the two of them, they can save the world. Or at least their little corner of it.

In the Nick of Time is a part of the multi-author Subpar Superheroes MM romance series

Molly Otto's review:

Well, this story was just plain out fun. When they say subpar heroes, they are not kidding. The powers help but aren't exactly the best. Doug (an actual hero, now on way to retirement) is paired up with Nick, who was added to SPAM really without any knowledge of the community. Together, they head to Vegas to stop fellow agents from being kidnapped. These two are an unlikely pair but oddly work well together. Nick is one of those guys who doesn't let anyone see the true him so that he can do what he does best, observe, talk way too much bringing down others defense than solve the problem like it's nothing. It's a fun read for sure.

Rogue's Review:

- shared universe
- age gap
- superheroes

This is set in the shared subpar heroes universe, but can be read as a standalone. This book was so much damn fun, I loved it right from the moment I met Nick, and I knew it'd be a wild ride the instant he picked up a tortoise from the street. Nick is an absolute joy of a character, from rescuing wildlife in the street, to the non-stop needling of his new partner with age jokes, he's a hoot. I liked Doug very much too, he was the perfect foil for Nick. At the start I thought he was just grumpy but he did show flashes of humour and as I got to know him I liked him even more.

The story is fun too, as it's set in Vegas an Elvis impersonator is a must, along with other badd guys and gals and it moves along at a good pace, I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. I loved the development of Nick and Doug's relationship too, they really did fit together brilliantly, and Doug saw far more in Nick than I think anyone has. I loved this story so much, and the discovery of what Tim actually is was the best.

So much fun, and highly recommended.
