A Spooky Legacy (The Spectral Files Book 5) by S.E. Harmon

A Spooky Legacy is a must read for fans of the Spectral Files, as we return to Danny and Rain settled into marriage but still navigating Rain's supernatural gift that continues to bring them dead bodies and ghosts. Fans of the series definitely won't want to miss this one!

From the blurb:

Rain Christiansen is settling into married life with fellow cold case detective, Daniel McKenna, and life is good. Better than good, even. But when it comes to the topic of expanding their family, Rain isn't so sure he's ready. Yes, a new addition could enrich their lives. But it could also tear down the delicate balance they’ve worked so hard to achieve. Do they really want to take that risk?

He’d love to brood over that a little more, but murder never takes a day off. A decade-old mystery of the missing Parker family is heating up. Most seem to think the Parkers pulled a disappearing act to get out of financial debt. It isn’t before the PTU finds out the reality is far grimmer than that. It seems that Quinn stumbled upon something better left hidden. Now that Rain has stumbled upon it, too, he has to be careful that he doesn’t meet the same fate.

Sometimes it amazes him how far he’s come from strait-laced FBI agent who couldn’t admit—even to himself—that he saw ghosts. He’s done the work, learning to get some measure of control of his paranormal side. And while his relationship with ghosts may not be perfect, it’s evolved into something symbiotic...which is a very good thing. Because in order to protect himself from the living, he might need a little help from the dead.

SNik's review:

Fifth in series (The Spectral Files), best if read in order. Paranormal. Established couple. Found family. Single POV. Heed content warnings.

Jumping right back into Danny and Rain’s life together, they are as usual dealing with finding dead bodies and random ghosts asking for help, but not letting it interfere with their current happy marriage and their plans to possibly adopt. Boy, have I missed snarky sassy Rain and his relatable character as well as his soulmate Danny, always steady, always loving, and not afraid to tell Rain his feelings.

This couple has come so far, and I adore every minute they are together on page, and the murder suspense is as always engaging and a little terrifying. The cast of secondary characters are just as close and supportive as they always have been, the love of found family is never in doubt with the group that surrounds Danny and Rain.

I would happily read any future stories from the Spectral Files as Danny and Rain continue their life together (hint hint SE Harmon), but so very grateful to get this sweet and spicy glimpse at how their life is and where it is going.

Jacqueleen the Reading Queen's review:

"𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗻𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗜 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗶𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲...𝗜 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂. 𝙃𝙤𝙬? 𝙃𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙪𝙘𝙠 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙄 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩? 𝙄𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚, 𝙄 𝙛𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪."

It was such a pleasure to be back with Danny and Rain. I'm always thrilled when S.E. Harmon revisits one of my favorite couples and this case is quite the doozy. Lots of murder and mayhem to be exact. I enjoyed the whole mystery of the case. Harmon is good at giving you clues along the way, without making it obvious they are actual clues until the big picture starts coming together. That is true for both the case Danny and Rain are working on and some things happening in their personal life as well.

Speaking of their personal lives, now that Danny and Raine have been married for a bit they've decided it's time for them to take the plunge into parenting! Let's just say that Rain is very, well Rain, with his feelings on the subject of becoming a father. Even after 5 books I am still in awe of how that man's brain works. We are given a bit of a tease in the epilogue at the likely future child of the pair, but I think it's safe to say that the kid is going to be theirs. You could almost say it was meant to be and that's all I am going to say on the matter because it's going to be much more fun for you to find out why when you read it.

I hope this isn't the last book for these guys. I really meant it when I said it was a pleasure to read about Danny and Rain again. Their stories are never a disappointment, even if I do sometimes crave a bit more Danny and Rain personal time vs them working the case. It's just because I love these two so much and I'm a greedy reader for their romance. This one ends in a place that would work as a series ender, but I am going to cross my fingers that we may still get more of my favorite detectives in the future!
