Soul Eater, Monstrous, Book 1 By: Lily Mayne Narrated by: Michael Lesley

After having the book on my kindle for months, I finally got around to reading and listening to Soul Eater, the first in the popular Monstrous series by Lily Mayne. The audio was worth waiting for!

From the blurb:

Twenty years ago, monsters rose on earth and began a new age of civilization.

One where humans live in military-controlled, cramped and dirty cities along the coasts, and the majority of the United States is known as the Wastes. A lawless, desolate and dangerous place, teeming with monsters that have claimed the land for their own.

Including Wyn the Soul Eater.

He appears every three years, making his way across the country and slaughtering humans randomly, sucking them dry until they’re nothing but husks.

I’ve only been in the military for six months, but now I’m part of a unit tasked with trying to stop and capture him. And when I’m the only soldier out of hundreds that the Soul Eater leaves alive, I realise that something about me has intrigued him.

But what is it? What could a twenty-three-year-old guy from the south, with no one and nothing in the world, have possibly done to capture the attention of a death monster with horns, blackened fingertips and a face hidden in the dark depths of his hood?

Soul Eater is book one of Monstrous, a post-apocalyptic fantasy series featuring monsters and human men falling in love. It is a m/m love story and contains sexually explicit content and graphic depictions of torture and violence.

Jacquie's Review:

As I said, I came to this series late and have seen the hype over it all over social media for the last few months. I really had planned to read it sooner, but life got in the way.

Then I saw that it was coming to Audible, so I waited and used a credit for it. Let me tell you, the audio was worth waiting for!

Michael Lesley does a phenomenal job of not only consistently performing Danny's Louisiana accent but also Wyn's strange monster voice. I was really impressed by it all.

The story itself was great - a dystopian world where monsters are walking the earth, having broken through several tears. Humans live either in cities along the coast in poverty, or the wastes where they are raiders.

We meet Danny when he is second guessing his choice to join the military as he realizes they have been sent on a death mission to capture Wyn, the Soul Eater. Immediately, he and Wynn have a connection that later becomes something sexual when Wyn saves his life. Danny chooses to stay with Wyn, as he can't help but feel drawn to the monster.

The steamy scenes were really good, and the emotions felt by Danny, since it is largely his POV, natural. For all his age and experience, Wyn was quite sweet and often vulnerable. So adorable.

So, I get the hype and I'll be moving onto Edin's story next. I'm really interested in the big purple guy.
