Ancient History, South Rock High #1 by A.J. Truman

Ancient History is a fun read and a spinoff of Single Dads club featuring a second chance romance between former high school sweethearts in this opposites attract story!

From the blurb:

The guy who broke my heart is back and teaching at my school. I’m really trying not to give an F.

A long time ago, in a suburban high school not so far away, a closeted nerd (me) and a closeted soccer star (Hutch) fell in love and planned to make their public debut at prom. Until Hutch bailed at the last minute, leaving me with a broken heart and unworn tuxedo. Tale as old as time, right?

I spent the past ten years working to forget Hutch, returning to our old high school to teach and make new memories that could erase ones of him. I thought Hutch was ancient history, off living his professional athlete life. But he’s suddenly back in Sourwood, coaching soccer at South Rock High, and sexy as ever. Just when I’d gotten over him, we’re now colleagues.

As Hutch leads the soccer team to victory once again, and we find ourselves trading stolen glances in the halls, it feels like a reboot of our high school bad romance. Especially after a late night encounter where I find myself climbing him like the rope in gym class. Oops.

Hutch wants to give us another try, but what if history is doomed to repeat itself?

Ancient History is a second chance, nerd/jock, small town romance filled with humor, heart, and hot guys. Hutch and Amos will put the A-plus in HEA, and like all good students, there’s no cheating. It’s the first book in the South Rock High series, which revolves around a found family of nerdy gay high school teachers.

Jacquie's Review:

A sweet second chance romance and introduction to a new series.

I really liked Amos and Hutch together once they started working things out. I felt bad for how things had fallen apart from them but wished they'd communicated better. They got there in the end and it was really sweet.

The secondary characters were great and I especially loved Pop. It was great to have such a supportive size character. I'm really interested in Amos's friend circle and enjoyed how they took Hutch into the fold.

Janet's Review:

Ancient History is the first book in A.J. Truman’s South Rock High series. This is a spinoff of the Single Dads club series. It was a seriously fun read that keep me flipping the pages!

Amos is our resident nerd, and Hutch is our jock. They have history, a lot of history! They were hidden/closeted high school sweethearts.

Amos never left Sourwood, he’s the ancient history teacher at the high school. Now Hutch is back and is the new soccer coach and P.E. teacher.

I really loved that this was fairly low angst. There is some high school drama that plays out nicely. But the character that stole the story was Bud, Hutch’s dad. He’s so funny and down to earth, every gay boy should have a dad like Bud!!

Overall, an excellent start to a new series. I cannot wait for more! Well written with pacing that sucked me right into the story. Highly recommend.

Sheena's Review:

This is a spin off series from the Single Dads club series, they're set in the same town but you don't need to have read the previous series to enjoy this, except maybe pick up the freebie story Getting Schooled, not only because it's fun, but it is the prequel to this series and features the school principal.

Hutch and Amos were high school sweethearts, and this is a story of second chances with a little redemption and a hilarious interfering dad.

I really enjoyed this book, it was fun being back in Sourwood but in a new setting in the high school, this is Amos and Hutch's story and it really had everything. Hutch is a little lost after coming home after his pro soccer career didn't work out and is back at his old high school as a teacher. His high school sweetheart Amos is also a teacher there and there are some unresolved feelings between them, not all good. Amos is so sweet and nerdy and cares so much about his students, I was so happy for them to get their second chance as they never really moved on from each other.

Hutch's dad nearly steals the whole story, his interactions with his son - setting him up on a dating app, pushing him to go to gay bars, and his interaction with Amos are all brilliantly hilarious. This is pretty low angst, there's a bump in the road with a spoiled student but like me, you'll be cheering Hutch's Erin Brockovich moment and applauding him for standing up to those awful people. It's fairly hot too, these two can't keep their hands to themselves and it's 🔥

If the rest of this series is half as good as this, then we're all in for a treat. I am looking forward to all their stories, as the supporting cast of characters will all bring something different to the table.

SNik's Review:

First in series (South Rock High). Second chance. Found family. Dual POV.

Amos loves teaching history at his old high school, with a great set of friends and his plans to travel the world the last thing he is expecting is for history to repeat itself. Hutch is back in town to coach the high school boys soccer team and Amos can’t forget the heartbreak Hutch caused ten years ago, vowing not to let Hutch steal his heart again.

This story is filled with a surprising amount of humor, great supporting secondary characters, heart wrenching feelings of the loss of a first love, and eventually some steamy interactions between Amos and Hutch.

I appreciated that Amos did not fall right back into a relationship with Hutch, reestablishing a friendly relationship first and then finding the ability to trust Hutch again. Both men never lost the feelings of love for the other so the second chance felt inevitable and sweet.

Entertaining start to a new series, looking forward to more from the teachers at South Rock High school.

Heather's Review:

Ancient History is sweet and sassy introduction into the world of South Rock High, which spins off from AJ Truman's Single Dad series and gives us a new quirky friend group to look forward to reading about!

This book was a good balance of funny, sweet, steamy and just a little bit of angst.  I really enjoyed getting to know Amos and Hutch, as well as the other teachers and Hutch's dad... whom I thought was wonderful!

This book had a bit of zero to sixty going for it - once Amos decides to take Hutch back, they jump right in!

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of Amos & Huck when we get their friends stories.
