End of the Line (Jake's Bar #1) by A.G. Meiers

A police detective in need of a place to hide and a bar owner with protective instincts that offers to help. End of the Line starts a new series with action and intrigue while introducing a set of interesting characters from different walks of life that fall in love.

From the blurb:

Opposites Attract…T R O U B L E…

Jake Devlin knows trouble when he sees it and he wants no part of it. His quiet, peaceful life is a hard-fought dream. And the man who stumbles through the backdoor of Jake’s bar—beaten to hell—he is trouble with a capital T. The last thing Jake needs is to get involved with the sexy and secretive stranger. He definitely shouldn’t offer him a place to stay. But…he does…

Murder and mayhem follow Detective Miguel Conway. One minute he’s working a case, and the next, his cover is blown and he barely escapes with his life. Con didn’t expect Jake to offer help when he needs it most. And he definitely wasn’t prepared to fall for the grumpy ex-Marine. But…he does…

Attraction sparks as the two men are thrown together to figure out who wants to keep Con quiet and why. Well, at least Con is trying to solve his case. Jake is mainly trying to protect the young, impulsive cop. Midnight stakeouts, a celebrity wedding, and passion-filled nights—can Jake and Con find the balance between taking risks and keeping safe? And turn attraction into happily ever after?

But none of that matters if they fail to get the target off Con’s back…

SNik's Review:

First in series (Jake's Bar). Close proximity. Age gap. Dual POV.

Police detective Michael Conway is running from danger when he gets mistaken for the hired help, and “Con” sparks instant attraction and protective instincts in bar owner Jake.

The story occurs over a short time frame, so feelings develop quickly as Con hides out with Jake while trying to discover who blew his cover, and since Con is high society and only needs Jake for a short time, there is a ticking end date to their whirlwind of a relationship.

Some background is provided for both Con and Jake to show their motivations, Jake being an ex-marine with a rough childhood and Con being the rebel from a political royalty family, but the few days together doesn’t really allow for a more emotional connection which would have thrown this into more romantic territory.

End of the Line is fast paced with enjoyable main and side characters, and some steamy interactions between Con and Jake as well.

This is the first book in the series so it has already set up the next set of main characters and a larger overarching storyline to keep up the action and intrigue.
