Take Shelter With Me (Sheltered Connections, 3) by R.M. Neill

"Jake's story, finally and we get to see him cutting loose a little and getting his happy ever after with Matts." Sheena on Take Shelter With Me.

From the blurb:

One thrives off order.
The other lets his heart guide him.
Together they are perfectly balanced.

Jacob
All elements of my life are controlled and measured. My days filled with check lists and colour-coded columns. With an animal and a youth shelter to run and people counting on me, I have no time for distractions.
Yet I can't get the man I spent one fiery night with out of my head.
He has me acting on impulses I didn't know I had and tossing my responsibilities aside.

I want to be with him and find the perfect balance between my personal and professional life. But how is that possible with us forced into a long-distance relationship as he travels with his hockey team?
Just when I think we can follow our hearts and make this work, a face from my past reappears, threatening to destroy all I've built.

Matts
I hoped returning to the NHL would fill the void in my life and restore my sense of purpose. Instead I felt that same emptiness.
Until I met Jacob.
After the anonymous night of passion we spent together, I'm elated to see him again at a fundraiser.

He's my teammate's little brother and he thinks it's wrong to put his happiness first.
But I'm willing to do whatever it takes to prove our lives will be more fulfilling and complete together.
One way or another, I will convince him happiness is worth the risk.

Take Shelter With Me is book three in the Sheltered Connections series of stand alones. This 74k word story includes two men with giant hearts working towards healing themselves, off the charts sexual attraction, an obsession with lavender and the swooniest of grand gestures. A true tale of love always finding a way.

Sheena's Review:

Take Shelter With Me is the third in the Sheltered Connections series, and I've been waiting for Jake's story since the first book. I was so looking forward to Jake finally getting his happy ever after and I wasn't disappointed. I think this may be the best of the three, and that's saying quite a bit as I really liked the other two books as well.

Jake runs the animal and youth shelter and has been featured in the first two books but it was good getting to know him better. I love how organised he was, yet had a wild side that he'd show only to Matts, as it turned out. I liked the two main protagonists, honestly. Both had trauma in their past that they're trying to get over - and Jake's in particular added a little twist that I really enjoyed. I enjoyed more so how Jake got out of trouble, it's a little peeve of mine that people do silly things and I'm glad Jake didn't, it was a nice refreshing change.

These two together were hot, funny, sweet and so meant for each other, it was brilliantly done. While they did have that initial first hookup, the rest was a wonderful slow burn with lots of sweetness and dare I say fluff. I'm all for fluff in books with a little angst and this had that too. I loved this story and I was so glad to see Jake get his happiness because that boy deserves it. So does Matts and I loved it all.

Janet's Review:

First off, I do recommend reading The Perfect Pass before reading this one. That is Austin’s story, and he plays a huge supporting role in this story. I had the honor of beta reading this story. I laughed and giggled most of the way through reading it. Matts and Jacob were so much fun to read. They were absolutely amazingly perfect together. Matts goes with the flow to Jacobs orderly life.

I can honestly say I will never smell lavender again without getting all hot and bothered. I loved the communication, the chemistry, the romance, there wasn’t anything about this book that disappointed.

It hooked me and engaged me so much that I couldn’t stop reading it and was begging the author for more! Overall, a truly beautiful and romantic story, pure fun to read! A must read!!

Heather's Review:

All of R.M. Neill's stories are interconnected, but none more so than Sheltered Connections, since it's tied directly to The Perfect Pass, I recommend reading that one before you read this, unless of course you want to jump into Sheltered Connections and go back to find out how Logan and Austin got together and founded the shelter... that said, I've been waiting for Jake's story since Perfect Pass, so I am now a happy girl...

Take Shelter With Me starts with the classic one night stand - no names, no contacts, just amazing sex with a stranger... until you meet up again when your worlds collide and you find out that there's an obstacle to being together.   This is a fun trope and R.M. Neill creates the right amount of tension and angst, both through the connection between Jake and Matts and the distance...

This book peels back the characters layers slowly, giving us hurt/comfort vibes and depth to the character's backstory that holds you hostage as they resolve their issues...

This was a wonderful story from beginning to end and I read it through without stopping for breaks!

Laora's Review:

This is the third book in the series. I have not read all the earlier books yet but  I did not feel I missed crucial information, I however will be reading the earlier and upcoming books. There is an overarching storyline, but in this book I as a reader got enough information about that storyline.

Jake and Matts are the main characters and find attraction and later on love after a one night stand and a long distance relationship. These men both had traumatic things happen earlier in there life but are coming to terms with those and are actively choosing love and each other and their friends and their family.

I read this book from cover to cover in one sitting and just wanted to know how it finished. The author has a writing style I really enjoy.
