Definitely Deacon (Belong to Me #2) by Vawn Cassidy

Childhood best friends need to make choice, do they cut ties or do they face up to their feelings and build a future? Definitely Deacon is a must read.

From the blurb:

Jesse Ainsley’s life running his busy veterinary practice in the sleepy Cornwall bay he grew up in leaves no time for a serious relationship… at least, that’s what he tells himself, but the simple truth is much more cliché. He’s been in love with his best friend forever, but when he starts pulling away and goes radio silent on him for six months, Jesse begins to wonder if their friendship is finally over.

Deacon James lives his life at two speeds, a hundred miles an hour and stop. He’s spent the last decade traveling the world, winning races, partying with the most beautiful men and women, and living life on his terms, a life which was pretty close to perfect… with just one caveat… he’s never quite been able to get over the boy he left behind. His best friend Jesse has always made him yearn for something he’s too afraid to face and cutting him out of his life seemed like the only answer.

But things are never that simple. When Deacon wakes from an accident in Italy with Jesse asleep in the hospital chair beside him, he discovers Jesse’s been keeping secrets of his own.

At a crossroads in their life, they’re faced with a choice, build something deeper and stronger from the ashes, or let words unsaid and secrets tear them apart forever.

From author Wendy Saunders writing as Vawn Cassidy comes this second chance, friends to lovers, hurt/comfort with a HEA.

Heather Not Guilty of Books Review:

Vawn Cassidy is an incredible writer who has the ability to transport you, to make you feel every emotion, and make you fall in love right along with both the characters. Definitely Deacon is a heartfelt look at two best friends for whom turmoil and life gets in the way of them having a chance together until tragedy forces them back together and they need to re-examine their lives and the choices they’ve made. Deacon and Jesse are both incredible and complex and have a beautiful bond. Throw in some favourite characters from the previous book and The Bay, then add some raucous friends of Deacon’s and you’ll be completely enthralled. If you’re a fan of reading a book with perpetually damp eyes, then this is a book for you. Vawn Cassidy is definitely an auto-read author for me.

Sheena's Review:

I didn't have to think too hard at all about giving this 5 stars. It made me laugh out loud more than once, it made me cry (which is harder to do than you might think), it made me think and ultimately left me feeling happy for Jesse and Deacon and wanting more. What else can you really ask for?

Definitely Deacon is the second in a series, you can read it as a standalone but please go and read Suddenly Beck because it's just as good as this one. This is a best friends to lovers, second chances story with two protagonists who have both been through a lot. They were best friends when they were younger but have spent the intervening years apart while still trying to remain best friends. My heart honestly was with Jesse, he's such a complex, caring, loving person who literally gives everything for his friends and family. I only realised how much towards the end of the book but the clues are there. I have so much I love about this book but I'll try to keep it kind of brief. I loved it all.

It's the perfect read, at least for me. I also adore the supporting cast of characters who just seem to keep growing and I'm here for that. No spoilers but that scene in the epilogue in the hotel room is one of the funniest, yet ultimately sweetest, things I've ever read. I think I've just clicked with this author, to be honest. I love all the pop culture references (The Rock/Dwayne 😂), the humour, the banter, the whole thing. I'm so glad there is going to be more in this series because I need it. (Also if you're reading this, I NEED Colin and Garrett's story, please and thank you).
